Rear Main Seal Replacement

I have a 64 1/2 Mustang with a 170 and a C4 transmission. Can anybody please tell me the easiest and the best way to replace the rear main seal? Also, what would be the best seal to use? Are there different kinds/materials? I'm no super mechanic, but I've rebuilt an engine by the book so I'll be able to do it myself and I have an engine hoist if I need to pull the the engine.

The engine was rebuilt by someone before I got the car, runs great, and looks clean, so I'm under the impression that there are very few miles on the rebuild.

8) pulling the engine would be the best way to go especially if you have the rope type seal. if you do i would upgrade to the later type seal.
