rear main seal

I'm replacing the main bearings on my "68 block [200] while it is in the car. Since I disturbed the rear bearing cap which holds the rear crankshaft seal I am wondering if I should replace it to guard against leaking [ it wasn't leaking prior to changing the bearing ]. Can the rear main seal be changed without removing the crank while the engine is in the car? It appears to be a two piece rubber seal. Or is it best to leave it alone and hope it won't leak?

Fixin' to do the same, you can replace it without the crank being pulled. If you are buying Fel-pro it will tell you how in the new gasket set you get.

I ordered a split noeprene seal today. The half in the bearing cap looks simple enough. Can any of you give me some advice as how best to remove and replace the upper half? Thanks.

I used a wooden dowel to get it pushed out a little then just pulled it out with some pliers.

Packing puller. Looks like a little cork screw. We use it in the refinery to pull packing from bearing seals on pumps. Call an industrial type pump shop.
