Anyone have any tips on replacing the rear main seal on a 200, engine still in car. I will be doing a T5 swap soon & I figure while I'm there.
What is the best way to get the old upper seal out with the crank in place?
Do I need to loosen all the mains or can i just pull the old one out and slide in the new. I helped do this once before many years ago but the years have taken their toll on my memory. :?
Any tips would be helpfull
thanks

I had to pull the engine to do mine, well I was going to pull it any way. The old rope seal would not budge no matter what I did, from every seal puller I could find to home-made soft brass punches. If you have this problem you will have to drop the crank to get to it. 'Cause when you tap the seal from one end to push out the other, it just bunches up in the middle. I even tried to screw a threaded cable into the seal and pull it out, all it did was break the ends of the seal off. It is fustrating and I heard words come out of my mouth I have never heard before. Make sure small children and respectable women are not in hearing range. Best of luck to you, and hope it works out OK.

ps. when you get around to putting the new one in, make sure the ends are staggered on each side and not even w/ the block (prevents leakage that way)

Look for posts by wsaIII on this subject. He has the definitive method and products IMO.
