Rebuild Question

I currently have a 71 model 200 completely torn down, including removal of all pistons. I have been told that the costs for preliminary work would run around $250 to 275 for the block work, around $135 for the crank and around $350 for the head. Does this sound accurate? I am not concerned just want to know if this is low or high or right on.

It does depend on the degree of "refurbishment". If you want to evaluate and re-use all re-usable components without replaceing most common items you might get away with the costs you mentioned.

A re-built short block will cost about the same since only worn components are usually replaced.

In this area I would guess-timate an engine rebuild will cost from 1500 - 2500 dollars. If you dis-assemble and re-assemble the same components and only have the valves ground and have it bored for oversize pistons and install crank, pistons, bearings, cam and internals yourself you could probably get away with about half of that amount.

There are so many parts to replace in a total re-build it would be difficult to accomplish for under @ $2000 in this area.

Howdy Back Ted:

Prices vary considerably from place to place. You might do some checking with other machine shops in your area to determine fairness.

But remember, the bitterness of low quality lasts long after the sweetness of low price is gone.

I appreciate the feed back from everyone. I didn't expect the price to be much lower than what was estimated to me. He did tell me that the cost would most likely run around 1500 complete with me doing most of the work after he does the machining. Again thanks.
