how do you do this? if i try to untighten the middle bolt, it will turn the engine. if any of you could give me some instruction on this it would be greatly appreciated, we'll be taking my 200 block into the shop to get rebuilt either tommorow or sometime this weekend.

It's out the car, right? Makes the job easier. You need two people if at all possible.

Tools: Breaker bar, lump hammer, socket and 4" extension.
Safety: Eye protection (you're beating on hardened steel).

The "helper" holds the socket end of the breaker assembly square and hard to the balancer bolt head. The bar is jutting out horizontal.

Now the bar is struck hard and suddenly with the lump hammer. The thread is normal right-handed. Three or four hard, sharp blows will loosen the bolt. Leave the bolt in place with a 1/8" clearance under he head.

The next step is to use a balancer puller. The point on this will bear against the bolt head. If you remove the bolt first, you will likely damage the thread it screws into. The bolt is hardened steel and the puller will suffer before it does. As the balancer starts to come loose, you'll need to back out the bolt periodically to maintain that clearance under the head.

Be prepared for the running surface of the balancer against the front seal to be worn; it may need a skim or sleeving.

Cheers, Adam.

Make sure you grease the threads on the center bolt on the puller or you will damage the threads. There is a lot of friction here and the heat can build up rapidly. I had to use an air tool to get my damper off of my 170.

An impact works great for this too if you are carefull with it.
