Replacing a rear main on a 170

Hello! I'm gonna replace my rear main before I put in my new c4, I'm wondering if I can do it without pulling the pan totally off and yanking off the main bearings. Any help or advice on this Of any kind would be greatly appreciated!
The motor is a 63

Well I did it! Pulled out the old rear main and found an old ford number on, it was from 1969. It was pretty much disintegrated in there, not much more than just the metal

I'd seriously take a look at the other bearings while you're in there...

Yea I did, the motor must of been overhauled a few thousand miles ago, it looks incredibly clean in there, plus the cam looks new, pistons are aftermarket and cylinder walls look really nice. I've got a pretty good motor I'd say, now I'm just having some trouble with the tranny. :/

Not to nitpick, but something's not adding up. If it was overhauled recently and it ate a bearing, there's a problem. If they overhauled it but didn't replace the bearings, that's not much of an overhaul, imho.

But if it's running well, who am I to argue?

He just said rear main in the original post and didn't clarify whether he meant seal or bearing....

I didn't realize that I forgot to put seal! I'm sorry for the confusion I caused haha. But yes I meant seal. I got everything together and now I'm just waiting on the driveline to be cut and I'm out on the road again!

Still doesn't quite add up. Why would someone rebuild an engine and reuse the original main seal/s?
