i just bought a 72 maverick with a 250... im not sure what trans im guessin its a c4... well i drove it a little and while it was in drive it only had 1st so i woul just manually shift it between l1 and l2 wich was fine except it screamed at 60mph. it didnt slip in those two gears so i figured it was just a vacuum line that was cracked. while i was taking it apart to do the head gasket i found the line was broken and i replaced it. it still didnt shift so today i check the line that connects to the module. it was cracked so i changed it too. i went to test it and theres nothing... it still has reverse but drive and low and l1 and l2 slip horribly... any help?

How much had the car been driven before you got it and how much have you driven it since?

What condition is the fluid and filter in?

Not that I can offer advice, but I feel more information is needed.

it had sat for a while like a year or 2... fluid looks fine not burnt. dont know about the filter.... ive put 200 miles on it since i got it.

Vacuum modulator could be at fault, kickdown switch in transmission could be stuck in kickdown, constantly putting it in and out of passing gear and not allowing it to shift. That happened to me in my Mustang's C4. DON'T push it with the C4 at 60 mph, you WILL blow the engine. The C4 shifts 2-3 at 28? mph. Maybe less. That's A LOT of strain on 2nd gear, and a lot of RPMs. The modulator sounds to be more of the issue at this point, however, because if you put vacuum to it, and it didn't shift, but started slipping, that could mean that the modulator isn't processing vacuum correctly. Change it, and find out! =) Worst case scenario, the thing needs some hard parts on the interior, and might as well get a full rebuild while you're at it. =)

my 13,000 mile 2-Speed is getting hung up in first when cold. I basically keep punching it until it changes into second. Once warm, it's fine. I checked the vacumme line and it's in good condition and attached correctly. Should I just change the modulator?

No, that won't affect that. Make sure that the filter is not clogged. Check the fluid level. Also, it's good practice in older cars like ours to let it run until you see a temperature come up on the temp gauge. You will eliminate all of your cold problems. I will think a little more into your situation though, anthony. =)

went to move it the other day and all it has now is reverse. fluid doesnt look or smell burnt the vaccuum line was unhooked. drove it the day before with no problems... put it in gear the next day and nothng...

i replaced the vacuum module and adjusted the bands... still nothing :x

how much does it cost to rebuild the trans?

while i have it out i might as well pull the engine and get it rebuilt or just soup it up alittle

If you're gonna do it, do them both at the same time. You'll get a GREAT performance boost, and be really happy with the whole thing. It costs about 650$ to build it, including R&R around here. If you're pulling it yourself, a bench job should be less than that! =)
