Rocker Arm Oiling?

Well, I put about 1 gal. of Rotella 15w-40 T in my engine tonite and primed the pump, Oil came through to the front end of my rockers and then I quit priming. I thought I would see oil all along the way of the rocker...Does this mean I am getting the oil I need to the rocker or should I see it coming out elsewhere?

I just had my stock 66 200 running with the valve cover off and after a few seconds there was oil oozing along the valve side and dribbling over the top of the valve and spring and a fair amount running down the pushrods. Not sure how this would change with the engine not running. I had it running for about 20 minutes this way (while trying to decide if I have a cam problem) and except for two pushrods that seemed to spin pretty fast for some reason no oil splashed anywhere.

66 shop manual says oil is fed from #4 cam shaft bearing meterd by groove in camshaft journal. The passage in the block indexes with a hole in the head that is dirlled from a head bolt bore to #6 valve rocker arm shaft support. The rocker arm shaft supports have a square cored bolt mounting hole for more positive lubrication.

Thats not an exact quote but its early and I cant type or read well.

You probably won't see oil out of the rockers until the engine is runnig.

The reason is pretty simple. The are holes drilled in the rocker shaft and there are two holes in each rocker arm. When the rocker is moving through its stroke, the holes pass by the holes in the rocker shaft, and oil is sent through them to the valve springs and the push rods.

It was smart to prime the engine and get oil up through the block and the head into the rocker shaft. That way it is right there when you crank the engine, in stead of running dry for 30 seconds waiting to pump up.

You might want to pull the coil wire and crank the engine ove a couple of revs before you put the valve cover on. That way you can see the rockers are all getting oil.

You might want to review the sticky post on the rockers - their cleaning - and their oiling.

Good Luck

Get a little squirt oil can and give all the points of contact and the valveguides a drop of oil each. The engine will easily run for a half hour without any additional oil. Some hard core drag racers have the oil flow to the valvetrain completely blocked off, the only oil is from what they got from a little squirt can.

Darwin - how much did you mill off the head face? Did you recreate/reshape the transfer slot from the oil feed hole, to the head bolt hole, after milling? Or was it still adequate?
