Talk about right place at the right time. I detoured into my local parts store for some Lucas tranny helper stuff, when I guy piped up "Hey, is that yer falcon out there?". "That's got a V8 in it huh?" ( hehe fooled again by the Flowmasters  ). "No" I replied, it's a hopped up 6."

"Want another one?" he asked.

Well, long story short, I'll be picking up a '68 Mustang 200 complete except for alternator and starter with 35K original miles on it. Of course I don't need it, but my good buddy who is rebuilding a '63 Falcon for someone does. The car has a 170 and the owner desperately wants a 200 in it.

My real score is the tranny. I of course said that I didn't really need another 6 as mine was fresh..."however (crossed my fingers), it doesn't happen to have a C4 attached to it does it?" "Why yes, it does actually."

 JACKPOT!

tranny, torque converter, flexplate, bell, etc = $50

and the best part...it's like 10 minutes up the road! I almost drove hours each way last week to pick one up I was going to bid on.

OK, so there are questions at the end of this bragging...

1. should I replace the flexplate evem if the original looks ok. I've heard they are prone to issues. Are the visible or underlying issues you can't see?

2. with my Ford-O, the teeth are on the torque converter (right?). Is the C4 the same way?

3. speaking of torque converter, with my setup (see signature), what kind of stall rating should I look for? The one he has I stock and I don't think that's going to cut it. Can they be rebuilt/altered or do you just buy a different one?

4. starter. Is the starter position going to be an issue with my Pacemaker headers (or anythine else) or is the starter position the same or similar?

Thanks again all!

1) i've never heard of issues, but that's not saying much. What exactly have you heard that they are prone too?

2) with all auto transmissions that i know of, the flywheel has the teeth and the torque converter bolts to the flywheel. I've never seen a Ford-O that's out of a car so i don't know, but it wouldn't really make sense to me to do that

3) no clue, i believe they can be rebuilt though

4) if i remember correctly, Mike started stocking the Pacemakers because they don't have interference issues with any of the starters on any Ford vehicles (although i seem to remember there being an issue with the Fox bodies that might've gotten resolved)
EDIT: whups, i messed up, first paragraph on the Pacemakers page of FSPP
For high mount starter location only. Outlet diameter is 2" Port dividers (not included)can be purchased from Auto Krafters or from Clifford Performance

Re question #2, the six cylindar C4's that I am aware of have the teeth on the torque converter.

Good score on the engine and tranny!

Jim

Replace the flexplate. They are only $25.00 or so and Ford had a TSB (Techinical Service Bulletin) out on them in the 70's about cracking issues around the converter bolt holes.

Later,

Doug

uhhu..that's what I though I had heard. Thanks Doug. Are they an over the counter part?

Thanks Jim, that answers that question.

Yep, they are a over the counter part. I usually buy mine from Car Quest.

1. No reason to change the flex plate unless you know yours is bad. The Fordo and C4 use the same stamped steel flex plate. I used the same one off the original 144 in my 62 and bolted the C4 torque converter right to it.

2. Yes, the teeth are on the converter for both the Fordo and the C4. IIRC, only the V8 style flywheel has the ring gear teeth on it.

Can't help you with the last two.

Oh man, did we score. This guy was super cool too. Not to mention he lives on an airfield, has a hanger full of classics, and a 31K original miles mustang that is SPOTLESS that he stole for $6500.

Anyway, my new tranny, torque converter, felxplate, etc, etc are on the way to my buddies shop. SWEET!

As for the torque converter, should I be looking at a higher stall TC that what would have been stock on the '68 mustang 200 for my setup?
