shortened diff

i've decided to put the complete ef xr6 diff in the xt, but i need to have to shortened 74mm and the brackets changed.

can anyone recommend a good shop in the brisbane area to do this for me? any idea on price?

No workshops to recommend but a note on the saddles. I got quoted a ridiculous price on the Moroso saddles - it was cheaper to import a couple of sets than buy them locally.

You might like to think about this, cutting axle tubes is easy, getting of the spring pads is easy (leaves) and if you use two short axles and cut one side only you loose 90mm width, if your ok with welding cutting etc you car do this yourself.
ther is only one problem, when the axle is in the car the drive shaft is now offset to one side, and if the car is low it may touch the floor tunnel on on full bounce, consider carefully before doing this.
Otherwise if you can find two axles the reduced length then cutting the tubes is easy (xd xe axles?)

i've thought bout that but would prefer to have the diff centred, also i still have the original diff and considered using the axles from it but they are 25 spline as oposed to 28 in the ef.

I paid $150 plus saddles here for the diff welding, no cutting. For that price, I supplied all specs and a stripped down housing with carrier caps.

Axles needed more fun and games. The splines are heat treated, so this has to be undone, then redone, also re-shotpeened after.

If you are using older wheels then the axle flange centre boss needs to be be reduced to pre-XC diameter. I also faced off the ends of this boss to give more of a billet axle look.

For peace of mind fit new, long studs and open ended wheel nuts. For some unknown reason the diff place gave me these studs free (are they defective? did I look broke?).

You can use 25-spline axles but you'll need the 2-piece side gears from an earlier locker.

Installation of a new centre and setup lash etc is about $150 plus any parts. That's a cash price.

If you are fussy about detail, be warned that diff shops tend to scratch and grind stuff unintentionally - maybe build a cradle and pad it with leather scrap. If you don't want them to paint it after the work, make a big note and tape it to the housing. They'll probably still paint it...
