I'm planning on purchasing a dual out header, and was thinking about side exaust.

Theres two kinds i had in mind, the kind that goes all along the side and exits infront of the rear wheels (like patriot/ camaro/ corvettes) or the cobra R kind that have a muffler that come out and exit right before the rear wheels.

i'd prefer the first kind, but how loud would it be? what about exaust fumes? could you put a muffler on that kind?
Any links would be awesome.

im pretty sure it wont pass inspection. it might not have to pass an emission test but the exhaust has to pass a visual exam. this is in pa not to sure about any other areas. legally all exhaust has to exit behind the rear tires. BUT if you have connections with someone that inspects vehicles then go for it. the volume will depend on mufflers . i had a buddy that put side exhaust on a 87 firebird with just straight pipes and it sounded cool as hell but was really loud in the car . if you put exhaust with no mufflers exiting the rear it wont be as loud bc it will be under the trunk.

ive got a straight pipe that comes out right after the front seets and its in the middle of the car, not even the sides, and its not too bad. on the highway i just turn the music up to cover the exhaust sound but in town i roll down my windowso i can hear the sweet sound better.

I don't think you would have a problem here in Seattle. These are considered classics here in the Northwest and are exempt from the emission requirements because of their age.

I also prefer the older Thrush side pipes running the length of the car. Those styles were usually the absorption type muffler design (glasspak). Be prepared for a louder exhaust. Not only are you exiting closer to the window of the car a glasspak is just a louder design muffler. On the up side you will end up with very little or no backpressure.

If you’re ever in the Kent area on the first Friday of the month stop by the Bowen Scarff Ford dealership. The oldest Mustang Club in the country, Pacific Cascade Mustang Club (PCMC) meets here every month at 7:30. Come by and check out the club.

Have fun, Ric.

on my sons 62 futura we are running dual header into glasspacks and then using u-tubing run pipes up front again and connect to lake pipes with a single outlet on each lake pipe

Ive got duals into glass packs that exit right before the rear wheels, but they're underneath the car. As for looks, Lake pipes would look nice depending on the car, a friend of mine has a 67 stang with a 302 and lake pipes that looks TOUGH. Heres my advise on sound quality. My exhaust is loud and has a great really raw ripping roar when you rev it up (almost stock car sounding). Idling has a nice rumble with that subtle burbling sound. My pipes point down at the ground and are under the car, if youve got yours pointing sideways on the side of the cars it's gonna be even louder. my only complaint is that it tends to drone a bit when kept at steady mid to high revs. Maybe having the exhaust exit at the side will reduce the sound that is absorbed by the car and then transferred to your head!

check my site for picks if you'd like.

yes most side pipes do have mufflers - lake pipes don't. we wanted the slim look of the lake pipes only 2" in diam. side pipes are about double that.
