Grr...right when I think everything will be OK another problem comes up.
I had tried to skimp when I put the motor together and re-torqued an unused head gasket. Of course, it didn't seal right. There was no compression in holes 3 and 4.
So I got a new head gasket and installed it today. Fired it up and--skipping like crazy. Checked the ignition, fire on all wires. Timing is right, about 12* BTDC. Pulled #3 plug wire, and yep, no change in the sound. Pulled the spark plug and swapped with #2, no change. Got the compression tester out, and hooray, no compression at all. Checked #4 and had 130 psi or so dry.
So, I don't think it's the head gasket. It has new rings, so maybe I adjusted a valve too far down?
