SOLVED! What now? No compression in #3

Grr...right when I think everything will be OK another problem comes up.

I had tried to skimp when I put the motor together and re-torqued an unused head gasket. Of course, it didn't seal right. There was no compression in holes 3 and 4.

So I got a new head gasket and installed it today. Fired it up and--skipping like crazy. Checked the ignition, fire on all wires. Timing is right, about 12* BTDC. Pulled #3 plug wire, and yep, no change in the sound. Pulled the spark plug and swapped with #2, no change. Got the compression tester out, and hooray, no compression at all. Checked #4 and had 130 psi or so dry.

So, I don't think it's the head gasket. It has new rings, so maybe I adjusted a valve too far down?

bring #3 to TDC on compression and apply compressed air via the plug hole. This can be tricky and you may need a helper. If you're not right on TDC the air may push the piston down. While applying air, listen to determine where it is escaping. Out the carb - intake valve. Out the exhaust, exhaust valve. Oil filler cap, rings. Bubbling in the rad, into a water jacket. You get the idea.

You can use a leak down tester as well if you have access to one. Usually takes less hands. heh heh.

You mean it was one that had been installed before but the motor had not been run?

Yeah. I torqued it down but took the motor apart again before it ran.

I've re-used Headgaskets in that way before w/o any problems

IMO 0 compression = stuck or bent valve (or a hole in a piston or something).

Put 100# psi of air in the cylinder. Make sure valves are closed, air will go out the exhaust, intake or breather. Simple as that.
Hope its a valve adjusted too tight. Bill

Man, it runs a lot better now. Noticeably more power. This is the first time that it has broken the tires loose on dry pavement before. I have a Load-O and a carb with no SCV, so I disconnected the vacuum and popped in 15* or so of initial (total). Much better.

Wallaka, why do you have a politcal candidate avatar on a ford six site?

I got tired of sporting the Bush one. It was fun for a while, but eh. It's about time to change this one anyhow, I'm getting tired of it.
