Do these shop fees seem high or is it just me? Here is what he is doing:

Hot tank and magnaflux block
bore block for 20 over pistons
deck block to zero
install new cam bearings and freeze plugs
grind crank
recondition 6 rods and press onto new pistons

price $1100

more if I want him to balance the crank

What do tou guys think????

Sounds about right, maybe slightly on the highside. The boring goes for about $40-50 bucks a hole over here and $20 a journal on the crank.so thats about $500 and another $100 to deck the block. The hot tank and magnaflux would probably be another $100.Prices vary from place to place
and depending on how busy they are .Did he shotpeen and resize the rods ?

Spike,

If your just talking Labor & machining, your right in there. I paid $1,124 including Computer Balance and Re-assembling the short block, plus another $710 in parts.

Here's a brakedown that might be helpful:

Head V.J. $110.00
Head Surface $35.00

Open to big valves $40.00
Guides install $75.00
Bowl Blend Port $125.00
Block machine package $185.00
Deck Block $60.00
Rods Recondition $93.60 (7.80 each X 12)
Computer Balance $125.00
Assemble the short block $200.00
Labor & machining only (no tax) $1,123.60
L & R Custom Engine Parts $371.85 (Lifters, molly rings, Rod Bolts, Pushrods, Bronze guides, Springs. Seats, Retainers & Locks)
FSPP Parts $338.00 Dual Roller Timing Chain, SI Valves & dual pattern CAM (from Mike)
Total: $1,833.45

Remember the overall deal and your confidence in the shop count for allot.

wow I only paid $1400 on my 2.3 L about 4 years ago. with was for .030 over, gaskets, bearings, pistons (forged), head rebuild (two exhaust seats adn valves) being the slugs were $400 on their own and the total for head work ran about $250 and another $250 or so on rings/bearings/gaskets I guess I got a good deal

I had just about everything you can do done to mine, and I didn't even say what the 250-2V head cost me. Cha Ching!

Thanks. Just wanted to be sure I am not getting ripped off. I spoke with a bunch of shops before I found this guy. The main reason I went with him is because he is the only one who seemed excited about me building a hipo inline Aussie 6.

BTW Spyke before someone charges you extra for a "Crossflow" C4 Oz bell, note it was the same from pre-crossflow here. 1971 or so, through to about '87.

Bore and hone prices can vary. Torque plate hone-to-fit is a bit dearer but pays off in problems avoided.

Do you guys remember my post from a few weeks ago? There is a company called 5 Star engine and cylinder exchange. Look them up on the web.
See here is where you have to perform the "Gut-Check". Would it be better to rebuild the motor or buy a remanufactured motor? I would say it depends on what you have in your existing motor. If you already have put in performance parts (cam, timing chain/gears), you may not get them back. However, if your motor is stock and is on it's last leg, I would imagine your out of pocket cost would be less or close to the same as having the motor rebuilt (gotta figure in shipping as part of the cost). There are going to be pros and cons. You have to figure out which is going to work out best for you. I don't know what kind of warranty your shop is quoting, but 5 Star has a 1 year / unlimited milage warranty.
Something to consider.
Here are the prices from 5 Star:

2300cc 71-81 $499 $749
200 6 cyl 65-74 $449 $699
289 V8 63-67 $399 $699
300 I6 65-86 $499 $699
302 V8 68-85 $399 $649
351 W V8 69-84 $449 $749
351 M V8 75-up $549 $749
360 V8 68-76 $499 $799
390 V8 65-76 $499 $799
400 M V8 75-up $549 $749
460 V8 2Y 68-78 $649 $999
460 V8 3Y 79-86 $649 $999
The 2 prices are short block -vs- long block
Just something to think about as I am sure there are thousands of engine exchange shops out there.

Hope this helps you make a decision. By the way. I opted for the rebuild since I had a lot in my engine already. My rebuild ran me $1142.42.

I paid about 800 for the block rebuild including parts. The head was already done and only needed to be bolted to the block. I think it's a bit on the high side but not to bad at all.

seems about right i built mine up for about 1k but i have all my own machinery and acess to anythign i need cause im in part owner ship of a local hot rod restoration place engine dynamics. we have a flat rate on machine work 80 an hour what we get done in the hour is all u pay for plus parts ext.

Man, that seems really HIGH to me!

I paid like $50 for the block magnaflux and dip
$20/hole for bore ($120)
$40 to deck the block
$20 to install the cam bearings and freeze plugs (plus cost of plugs)
only needed a polish on the crank
$10/rod ($60)
head work: new seats, guides, milling, and reassembly was $225 I think

total: ~$550ish

I used some top shelf guys here too. Can you get a break down of his prices?
