Lately its been cranking slow at first then it picks up. Today I was checking the cables and it seems the stud in the starter is a bit loose. I dont remember if it was like that before or if this perhaps is my problem. I know some motors the internal wires are connected some other way so the stud being loose is not an issue. Anyone know how this one connects internally?

Depends on the starter many were soldered. did you tigten it up?

The cable is tight between the 2 external nuts. Have not had a chance to look further. I was thinking I should have a spare starter somewhere that came with one of my spare engines but its not one of those things I clearly remember taking off one of those engines. So far the 2 places I have looked have both turned out to be Cadillac starters I did not remember having.

It seems like its not going to turn over then it sort of bumps past a couple compression strokes then speeds up to normal as it starts. It does this now on both cold and hot starts. Charging system and battery seem normal.

Loosen and back off the top nut than hold on to the stud with pliers or double nut it, then tighten lower nut up. Reassemble. You might also add and extra ground wire to engene or starter mount bolt.
