Starting Problem

Ok guys, I've had this problem before but can't seem to make it stop. Sometimes my starter will not turn over. I can hear a click (i think from the solonid) but nothing happens. Last time I had this problem, I replaced the cable and solonid and it was fixed for a few months but now it is back. :( Maybe I need a new starter and everything that goes with it? If so I heard that there is a newer one out there that will fit the 67 bell (2 bolt). If there is, which one is it?

Thanks for the help!

What kind of shape is the battery in? Also are all the grounds nice and clean?

Depending on the store you can usually take your battery, solonoid and even starters and have them checked out. I would start with the battery though...went through a similar thing with the wifes van...first symptom of her weak battery was that we had to stand closer to it to get the remotes to work. Finally the remote wouldnt work and next day she wouldnt start

I'm guessing your battery terminal is dirty. get a terminal cleaner (or a wire brush) and try cleaning them (and the connections).

the batt. is an optima red top so no dirty connecters and I know that the batt. is good because I can run my 750 watt sound system in it with the car running or not. charging is not an issue because it has a 125 amp or so alt in it and it is producing the full amps. As for the grounds, everything is new and big. 8 guage for all the grounds as well as the primary wires. The starter is only a year old but I was leaning on it being the problem because of heatsoak from the headder. But when I replaced the solonid, everything worked fine for about a year or so.

I don't know, it is just bothering me that I change solonids as often as sparkplugs.

Ill go get the started tested and then see what to do after that!

Thanks for the help.

My starter motor, now a spare, did the same thing. There is a bad spot on the commutator so it acts dead until you smack it with a good sized wrench. When it didn't work, an ohmmeter gave an open circuit reading and I also measured 12 volts on it with the key turned to start. Once I figure out how to get the starters brushes to lock back, I will tear it apart and polish the commutator and test for an open winding. It is nice to have spare parts.

Are your commutators supposed to be undercut? Ours are on the local starters, and no-one does it, let alone does it properly. This is the first cause of many starter issues here.

Cheers, Adam.

Tap the starter with a hammer and turn it over. it should start right up. If it does, its your starter.

Your entire starting system consists of: Solenoid, starter, and the wires (power and grounds)... that's it! You can go to advanced and they will check solenoid, starter, and battery for you.
OR
take to insulated screw drivers and touch one to each end of the solenoid, then touch the two drivers together, that will "jump off" your solenoid - send a big surge to your starter, if it starts - you have a bad batt. If it still just clicks, you have a bad ground somewhere (probably your battery-to-block ground).

Good luck.
