Stick shift transmission options for 200 six? ON A 4X4

just trying to research for some long term plans, so bear with me here. i searched the site with many keywords, and haven't really found what i'm looking for. i'm looking for options for putting a more modern (aka fully synchronized) stick shift behind a "small-block" six (prefer a 200, already got one in the stang, so parts buying in pairs would be easier) and be able to hook a transfer case up to it. overdrive is not a requirement, doesnt matter if its a 3 or 4 speed either.

basically i'm trying to find a way to throw my bronco II body onto a 66-77 bronco frame/running gear, but with a newer transmission.

any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

*edit--> oh yeah, i have a spare 3 speed from a mustang. is there a way to mod it to where i can shift from 2-1? and hook a t-case to it?

The 3-speed you have I believe is the non-syncro 2.77. The only way to fix that is adapt a 3.03 3-speed.
The thing I don't know about is what modern stick shift would bolt up to a transfer case. What are the options for a '66-67 Bronc as far a transfer cases are concerned?

The 250 small block six has the same bolt pattern as a small block V8, so your options are better, but you have to adapt the 250 into your Bronco because it's slightly larger than 144/170/200.

Way back when I had a 4x4, I'd gladly traded in the 5 speed for an automatic especially rock climbing. Never did get used to the smell of hot clutch. I would also guess that with an automatic, it would be easier to install the shifter if it's cable operated especially if your using a differnt body.

Good luck,

if you use a 3.03 bell and flywheel you can put a T5 behind it. there are tail housings for a T5 for a transfer case. Alot of it depends on how much you are willing to spend. I have seen transfer cases put behing T56 transmissions with a custom tailhousing on them (fabricated steel)

the T5 or T4 route is the best bet.

sorry i didnt specify, the 3-speed is from another '65 stang. 66-77 bronco's came with a dana 20 transfer case. i want to stay with a standard, i dont rock crawl or anything, just some mild 'wheeling, and getting to camping/fishing spots. i like the T5 idea, i can (i think) get an adapter to mate it up to a BW 1350 transfer case, which is in the b2 now, or the BW 1354 from an explorer that i have at my dads house. i dont want to fabricate anything complex, i'm trying to keep this reincarnation simple (as many off-the-shelf/junkyard parts as possible). at least as far as running gear is concerned. i've heard the 250 has a taller deck height, but are the internals simliar?

hmm, does "3.03" refer to the first gear on the tranny, or is it a part number?
thanks for all the help so far!

3.03 refers to the center-center vertical distance between the top and bottom shafts in the trans...3.03 inches. The 3.03 is much heavier and stronger than the 2.77,and uses a wider spaced bolt pattern.

alright,

200 six (any certain year?)
"3.03" bellhousing and flywheel (what makes/models/years had this?)
T-5 transmission
T-5 to BW 1350 adapter
BW 1350 (or 1354) transfercase

thanks for all the help!

If you don't mind a different transfer case, there are factory options for a case behind a T5. Jeep CJ-7s came with a T5 and Dana 300 from the factory '82-'86. The Dana 300 is a passenger-sode drop TC, though, unless you drop the dough for a flip kit. Another T5 option is from the rare combination of '82-'83 full-size Cherokee/Wagoneer which had a T5 and NP208 case (driver drop). Most of those were auto Chrysler 727s with either the 208 or 219/228/229 cases. Chevy S-10s also came with a T5 and NP231 (driver drop), IIRC.

The 5-speeds in Ranger/Bronco II/Explorer (the good ones, anyway) were Mazda M5ODR-1s which have integral bellhousings for the 2.3L four and 2.9/3.0/4.0 Cologne (60*) V-6s. That's where you find the BW 1350/1354. I have no idea if that would be adaptable to a 200 or not.

Good luck, and I hope this helps!
