Jake here again, and I just made some great changes to my ride. I put the electronic ignition and new coil in, new battery, new single stage fuel pump, new lines, new filter (fuel), new pos and neg batt cables, checked all plugs and oil and everything and all were good to go. Started it up and it ran good took a bit till it idled maybe cause it sit for a while. Anyway as soon as pushed the choke in and then pushed down on the accelerator it died. The same d**n thing it did before i changed the stuff out. I just want it to idle good run good and go when i want it to go. I have no idea why it is dieing on me when i push down and the acc. Please any thought would me out a lot. I wish some of you "mechanical geniuses" lived close cause this is way to frustrating................. maybe throttle linkage, not sure the carb was good it an original holley 1908 single. who knows??????

Jake

it wasnt to long ago i had the carb rebuilt, but hey maybe i can take it in again. does anyone think it could be my throttle linkage? just wondering i have always had this prob with it since i got the chero. it is just a plane 144 with the small upgrades i have done.

I dunno...how does it run when you get under the hood and manually turn the throttle? Also, are you sure that your choke is releasing all the way?

well i have never tried that "under the hood throttle pull" i will try that soon to find out, i have a spring that goes at the bottom of where my carb is hooked up to the full linkage and i'm not sure where it goes. It looks like it is very tight where it was before on one of my tubes going to my carb. About the choke yeah i'm sure i checked it and rechecked again before i did anything else. made sure the butterfly closes and opens properly.

I would check 2 possibilities
1-- a small piece of trash sitting on top of the jet that is located in the bottom of the carb's float bowl. Had some recurring prob's with my wagon that always turned out to be that. I would remove the carb top and look in the bowl for trash. Very common problem after sitting or working on the fuel system-a tiny flake of rubber or rust will clog that jet.
2--Another problem area in the 144's is the vac advance diaphram in the distributor as these give out with age. The car will usually idle but won't accelerate worth a flip.

Hey danwagon, that was my next thing to change out. I had talked to my wifes uncle a Chevy guy, and thats what he said. I have not even touched the vac advace since i have owned the chero. so that will be my next thing to change out. I'll let everyone know whats up and also I need to send pics in of my ride.

THANKS TO ALL THAT RESPONDED, AND THANKS FOR ALL YA'LLS HELP THROUGHOUT. Jake

What did you set your inial timing at and see if it walks around counterclocwise on the damper pulley when you give it gas. Unless the timing is way off a bad diaphram usually won't hamper the idle. Trash in the carb or fuel filter will. A vac leak will also cause these symptoms.

Hey now, I am not sure of the timing at all. I am going to change out the vac advance on wed when i get off of work, so i'll let you know then. I was and still might just take the carb and get it rebuilt just beacuse. If I could get it runnin good then I can to my wifes uncles shop and get it checked out for sure. I'll let ya know on wed after I change out the advance.

My initial thought would be ignition. If you are pretty certain the carb is in decent shape then I would look there. I love the idea of Pertronix and have ran many of them BUT I guess I had a bad unit because one night whenever I applied gas the engine would cut out. Scary! I spent weeks switching things out and finally went to new points and voila! She runs great now. If you can, I would recommend trying points (doesn’t have to be a permanent thing but just to help you sort of the bad seed in your set up). I didn’t plan to keep points in but she’s running so good that I’ve left them in.

Keep us posted and Good Luck!!

Based on all the stuff you've already changed and also on the fact that it falls flat as soon as you touch the throttle, I would definitely be looking at that Holley carb closely. I have seen many of them have exactly this same problem, even immediately after a rebuild because guys will tear or pinch or otherwise damage the rubber piston on the internal accelerator pump plunger when rebuilding. One way you could tell if it is an accel pump problem would be to start the engine, let it idle till warm, and then very, very gradually give it some throttle. If the engine picks up RPM and maintains it, especially in gear, you can be pretty sure that its not a main jet circuit problem. If it does turn out to be the accel. pump in the carb, you'll have to pull the carb off the car, get yourself a rebuild kit, and start over. However, I believe the accel. pump is available by itself for about $2.00. Hope this helps.....

hey marvista66, and PapaDoc67 thanks alot for your ideas. I will be tring all of them and changing out the acc pump and the vac advance on wed and playing with the throttle linkage. The holley carb I have is an original one, and I have looked for extra carbs to have and play with but they are hard to find early 144 and 170 ones......hey marvista66 I see you have a c-4 behind your 200, I want to do that behind my 144 but I guess I have not got alot of power to run it...Thanks again everyone and i'll post on wed and let everyone know what i found.....jake

Well everyone I have been on the phone all morning and yet no single vacuum advance for my chero. Some places are selling the whole dist, for around 40 to 50$, comes with the vac advance. I guess i'm going to keep looking for something so any ideas would help a great deal......thanks to all...jake

I got my vacuum advance canister at NAPA. I don't think it cost $20.

I haven’t' seen the suggestion yet to actually check to see if it is the accl pump is working.

Before starting the car pull the air cleaner and hold open the choke. Move the butterfly/accel lever and watch for the tail-tell sign of fuel being injected into the throat of the carb.

If there is no squirt, the accel diaphragm needs replacing.

Good luck, Ric.

Well thanks to everyone... i just found both at trophy mustang again a very good source as well as the other we all know of. So i am ordering the air filter for a single barrel, also the vac advance, and will check to see if fuel squirts or not, havent had time....to long of honey do list.....lol take care all , jake

Well i ordered the vacuum advance and my new air filter, so we shall see what happens when they get here in a few days. hopefully she'll run good.....jake
