Surging on acceleration

Ok guys, need some more advice.

I never did lick the electrical problems, but I am going to have my wire harness rebuilt.

Some of you may remember that I have struggled to tune this Weber 38 DGES since I bought it years ago. I think I bought it over 10 years ago. Probably only driven a total of 1000 miles on it.

After the car is warmed up, it will idle just fine and I can rev the engine with no issues. When accelerating in 1st it has a major flat spot at about half throttle. When shifting to 2nd, I have to really baby it as it will develop a major flat spot and major surging somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 throttle.

Any ideas?

I am so tempted to take it off, replace with a Pony Carb and then do the head and engine work and put the Weber back on then.

As usual, I really appreciate all of your help!

Howdy Tex:

Unfortunatley, putting off the Weber fix til after the head is done will not solve the carb problem. It will only add it to new ones related to the new upgrades, My advice is to dig in and solve the Weber dilemma.

The bogs you are describing are either too much air, or too much gas at the wrong time. I'm not familiar with tuning a Weber, but with most carbs there are some crutches available to try enriching or leaning systems to assess. Your description cause me to think more initial timing too.

There is a good stickie here someplace on tuning Webers. Have you done a search? You might post a new thread specifying "Weber tuning problem". That may draw the right kind of attention.

Adios, David

Fuel pump not pumping enough fuel? Needle and seat plugged or not working right?
Plugged or restricted fuel line/filter/pickup in the tank?

Kinda sounds like you're running out of gas!

I'm not familiar with the operation of a Weber 38 DGES. Are the throttle bodies progressive or fixed?

Your problem almost sounds like how my 4V behaved when the vacuum secondaries were set too light and came in too early.
