Switching to a 2v carb, suggestions?

I have a 1v which was rebuilt professionally for my 1960 ford falcon 170ci, I'm considering switching to a 2v. However I'm nervous to put the money into a switch only to find I should've gone with a weber.... Etc. :help: I would appreciate feed back as to what you guys have experienced.... :thanks:

either carb is good, i used a 2100 autolite two barrel in me old 66 falcon. it worked well, but really wasnt much better than the one barrel that was on the engine. but that was due to using the 2v to iv adapter on the small log head like you have. were i to do that swap again, i would direct mount the carb to the head. now if you scare up a large log head, and use the adapter with the 32/36 weber, then the adapter would work better, smaller carb running air/fuel into a large hole. the 32/36 adapted to the small log head also works better than the larger 2100 autolite.

 you're the bomb..... Thanks for the insight.... That's my next project. I just feel like I have no power right now, granted before I started rebuilding this car it sat for nearly 8 years, I have replaced everything externally on the engine, including doing an alt swap to rid the car of the generator. I've done compression test and it's a little low across all cylinders so seems ok, just not too sure what else to focus on, between the weak throttle linkage hook up and the carb????

I don't personally have experience with this but in the 'Ford Falcon Performance Manual', which everyone should have a copy of, they recommend using a 1v carb from a 200 six for a performance increase. It could be reasonable in cost if you find a good used one and rebuild it. Also should be easier linkage connection and no height problems.
With the 2v you either direct mount or use an adapter as stated. I always liked the thought of the 32/36 cause you would get to enjoy feeling the secondary kick in when you floor it. But I remember a post where the guy complained that the primary really didn't provide enough power in everyday driving so he was always into the secondary. Might not be the same experience for you though.
I learned to drive in a 170 Falcon, it was a fun car.

ignition timing. push it to about 12-14 degrees initial. that will help with performance. and if you havent already, swap to a duraspark ignition. but as i recall you have an early 170, which means the stock duraspark distributor wont fit initially. so you will either have to have the shaft below the distributor gear turned down to fit, or the guide hole in the block opened up to fit. either way you will then need to swap oil pumps to the later one with the 5/16" drive. there is one other alternative, and that is to get an aussie electronic distributor that fits the smaller guide hole, but again you need to swap to the later 5/16 oil pump drive system. i have one of the aussie distributors somewhere, i will try to find it if i can.

I don't have anything to compare this to, because i made most of my mods before I had a running engine, but I've been really happy with the 32/36 on my small log head 200 with the adapter. I'd avoid the 38/38 though, it was too much for mine, so I'd imagine it would be tough to get running well on a 170. Keep in mind you'll need to make a custom pedal linkage for the Webers though, or switch to a cable setup... it's not a direct swap.

As mentioned, electronic ignition is great too if it fits... I got a duraspark distributor from NAPA and an MSD box and it starts up instantly.

Thanks everyone, it's really helping out. I do need to think the linkage out a little more and then I will save a little more money and finally be able to make the switch. I just got the header kit from classic inlines and I'm so excited to throw those on.... She's really coming together!

fox body cars used a cable throttle linkage, perhaps that would work in your situation?

I've run a 32/36 type H/W5200 progressive 2bbl on my 63' 170 (2.8L) for @ 5 years. Consistent idle and smooth cruise with carb from Capri 2.8 Cologne V6(?) . It uses a 2X1 adapter and original pedal linkage:

T5 and original 3.50 rear gears lets this mild child 170/63 get a little wild.

(The H/W5200 was used on so may different type and size engines and reportedly can be a tuning challenge 8) .)

have fun

Awesome tip, thanks for the info...

powerband, where did you get that carb plate with the pcv hole? Is that original?

Here's how I did the linkage on my mustang. Used a bellcrank to change the pull direction on the carb.
