I just purchased a tachometer and i got the 2 wires green and black through the fire wall and the black is grounded and the green is attached to the negative side of the coil (I think...I connected it to the side with the single black wire that attaches to the bottom of the distributor)...I cannot figure out how to wire up the red- power or the white - lights... Can somebody please Help!

so far so good...the white wire connects to a power source which only turns on when the lights are on...if u can find one then your set...not sure on your colorcoded wires, but if u take out your headlight switch..the one u pull on to make the lights turn on, there might be a blue wire with a pink stripe...either way...there is one wire on there which controlls the lights of the dash for when the headlights are turned on..u can tap into that source...the red power wire just goes to any power source, whether its to a constant or when the car is on power source doesnt matter..i have mine to a constant power source and have no problem with anything.

Yea... I got it hooked to a power source....It is constant though.....The tach seems to physically work....but it is not calibrated right.... there are wire loops to calibrate it to the right number of cylinders....i set it as 6 cylinder but it is not showing the correct rpms...i am contemplating cutting the other wire loop to 4 cylinder but i only want to do this if it will fix the problem... does anyone know why it is not working i mean what i think would be 5 or 6 thousand rpm shows as 2 thousand rpm???

What car is this in??? 5 or 6 k rpm isnt a good thing for our little sixes!!! It is probably right and your overestimating! I never go past 4000-4500 rpm personally.

i've had my car sit only for a max length of 1 week with no problems...but it is best i guess to have most power sources made to turn on when the car is on only. i never seen the wire loop, mine just has a switch, do u need to attach a wire to a certain loop or something? whats it read at idle? and did u drive it around for the 5-6,000 RPM hear test? reving to 5,000 RPM in park sounds like the engine is going to rip itself apart...maybe test it on another six cyl engine that already has a tach so u can compare?

it is in a 65 mustang with a 200 inline six. No modifications. I reach 30 miles an hour at about 3 thousand rpm. If i go much higher than 3000 the engine is roarin.
