Teflon Seal Installation

Long story short, I bought a head with these installed. The shipper wrapped the head in a piece of cardboard and put it on a truck. Needless to say, it was damaged during the ensuing trip. So far its just one exhaust valve. It was bent so I straightened it best I could and drove it out. I'm hoping I didn't damage the guide in doing so. The seal also looks to be damaged/bent. I've never dealt with these so I have no clue on how to remove/install one. I think I can get the removal done but how would you put the new one in? Or is it going to the machine shop? :roll: The valve is a whole 'nother story. I used my caliper on it and it measures 1.375", would that be right? Didn't see one on the CI site.

I'm guessing it is supposed to be an 1.38" valve. Have to dig into that one when I get back. Anywho, can you drive the seal on in the gararge? It looks to be crimped on.

No one knows or.....I'm way out there and I need to go to a machine shop? The problem is, the speed shops here won't touch a straight six. Never seen anything like it. They act like I have three heads or something :roll:

Think I got it....I need a valve seal driver.

We used to use an empty adding machine paper roll. If you find a socket that will allow the seal part that sticks up to fit inside while it pushes down on the part that goes over the guide. It will allow you to push it over the valve and then on the guide.
These seals come in various sizes to fit the valve and guide.

Thanks Stubby. Now I need to get home and get the measurements for both the valve and seal. Wonder if Mike will sell me a single valve. Geeze, wrap a cylinder head in cardboard and ship it. Wonder what kind of thought process was involved there?

BTW....you say "push" it, it won't need to be driven on with a hammer? I've never even seen one of these things before. Wish I knew about them earlier, they look pretty stout.

I just installed teflon seals on my alu head. Like Stubby, I used a socket that fit over the seal and pushed on what I would call the shoulder of the seal. They pushed on by hand, no hammer or press required.

The other problem I'm encountering is valve size. The face is measuring 13/8" and I don't see one on the CI site. Am I possibly measuring it wrong? I'm looking at the diameter of the face.

I think 1 3/8" (1.38") is the standard exhaust valve size for the iron head.

Difference between two sets is the size of the intake vales i believe, exhausts are the same 1.38".

The valva stem diameter is the size you need.
The seal has to fit the valve stem and the valve guide.
There are different cutters for the guides, you just need to know it was cut to.

Thanks, the valve stem is 5/16" and maybe I'm converting over wrong? 3/8" comes out .375 for me. Is it rounded up or something? Guides are already cut. The head was damaged in shipping and I'm trying to repair it.

13/8 = 1 5/8 = 1.625"
Early intake valves were 1.649"
Late intake valves were 1.750"

If the stem is 5/16 then the id would be 5/16 or .312

Then you need to measure the od of the guide where the seal fits.

With these measurements you can find the proper seal. The most common size would probably be .500 or .530.
