The '66 won't run!!! Help!

My 6-cylinder '66 won't stay running. It cranks up and then will shut off if I don't hold the gas pedal down, does anyone have any ideas? Is it the floats? Valve meter? I am really having a time with this, if anyone has any ideas I would be greatful.
The carb is a remanufactured one I got only a year ago, so I really don't think it needs to be rebuilt, its very clean. [/quote]

8) check your choke for proper operation, check your idle speed and mixture, check your float level.
 
Could be the float...but it doesn't sound like it to me. if the float was the problem, you'd have the opposite effect...it would probably run until you hit the gas, then it would eventually sputter and die.

I think you have a either a clogged fuel filter or a clog in your idle fuel circuit. By pressing the gas and keep RPMS up, you are making the fuel pump push more fuel through the filter, and enough may be getting by to the carb. If it is the idle circuit, what is happening is that when you step on the gas, you are starting to use the transition and main circuits, which will provide enough fuel to keep the car running until the RPMs drop and the carb returns to the idle circuit only.

Both of those can happen very quickly. I had my idle circuit clog on me in a matter of 10 miles of driving. When I started from visiting a friend, it was running great. By the time I got home, couldn't keep the car running below 2000 RPM. I swapped out carbs and it returned to running fine.

I would say if it runs with the gas pedal pushed then to check the fast idle screw and see if it is giving it enouff idle and also check the idle screw and see if it is in enouff and the mixture screws...

Actually, a faulty float or stuck/leaking needle valve would let raw fuel into the carb throat. Cracking the throttle would keep it running by increasing the airflow, and therefore the making the fuel to air ratio low enough to run. :wink:
 
I've had some extremely bad running reman carbs (Tomco/Champion). They would either run ok for a few days or not run at all. Some had the same symptom you list - having to keep a foot on the gas.
 
Points? if your points are not gapped far enough it will Run Horribly if at all at low rpms, then when you spin the engine up, it will bounce the points more making it seem like it is running better...

Also Tomco Carb rebuilds are shit.. I got one the mounting screws stripped out with hardly any pressure, it ran like shit, took it apart, put a lighter to the choke..... The bimetallica strip was wound backward.. the hotter it got, the tighter the choke closed..

Save yourself the trouble goto checker and get a Holley rebuild
 
Did you consider a vacuum leak? If this is a new symptom you may have a loose hose somewhere.
 
i had a problem similar to that. i replaced my entire choke system and it was fine. I didnt understand what was wrong with it, but it works now so I'm not complaining.
