Theoretic Piston Question

I was just sitting around thinking about rods, pistons, stroke, and rod ratio wondering how to get a longer rod into a 200 and I had a thought.

Instead of having the pin go all the way through the piston would it be possible to keep the pin fully inside the piston, no external holes at all, and secure it onto the pin with something like tiny rod/main caps?

I was only wondering because if this was feasible at all then couldnt you almost put the pin AT the same distance from the top of the piston as the compression rings?

there are VW and Subaru pistons that will fit our blocks and have a compression height of less than 1.5". Most of those are flat top pistons except for a certain type-4 piston which has a dish of ~13cc. Inliner also has a supplier that makes forged flat top pistons with 1.04" CH. Of course it's up to you to pick the rods.

Best option is chose a reliable piston, and a set of 5.2" long Lima 2300 rods.

The ACL hyereutectic psitons are 1.163" tall, have anything from 2 to 3 rings, and have a dish of about 15.3 cc or a flat top. The Argie forgings look even better.

The use of a copper 125 thou gasket with the ACL's, or a stock gasket those wild 1.04" forged pistons, well, you got it made.

The rod ratio is so much better, and there is a brilliant rod and piston to orbit around one of the toughest cranks in the business.  :D

Ron,

These Argy pistons have just what you are describing. With a 1.04¨pin height the pin is right up at the top of the piston. The pin is shorter than standard, and the wrist pin bore is grooved on each side for circ-clips to hold it inside the piston and not walk out and hit the rings. Since you have gone that far, you also bush the connecting rod for a full floating setup.

A 2.3L OHC rod looks like a great fit. a .067¨cut on the crank will let you use standard 2.3L rod bearings. With a straight cut, and 1.04¨pistons you are looking at a ZERO deck height. Perfect in my book. I can´t wait until I have the money to try it out.
