Thinking about ditching the port devider for a while.

Yea, it's hard to look cool when your six sounds like the motor is falling apart! After I used the A&B epoxy it shut up for a week or two but now it is back to rattling again. :x I just took the header loose and all the epoxy is gone. I may have not preped it good enough but it is hard to do to much with the head on the motor in the car. I don't want to weld it with it in the car with not much space from fear it could get screwed up. I figured in a few months the motor and head will be out of the car when I try out the turbo setup and then I can weld or epoxy it up RIGHT. So what I am getting at is do you guys see any bad effects from running nitrous and no port devider? Or will it be fine with maby a little power loss? I would think it would be okay but I though I would check with you guys to make sure.

Dan

i took mine off to due it being lose and I didnt notice any power loss at all, just the absence of exhaust leaks :).

Had a problem with my divider in my 200. Listened to it rattle all the way to Mississippi and back. About 1800 miles. When I got home I took the header off and re-epoxied the divder in place. Just for grinns and giggles I located a place in the header plate just over where the divider would be and drilled and tapped a hole for a 3/8 bolt and lock nut. When I put the header back on the divider was quiet for about one week (epoxy sucks). When it started rattling again I just tightened up the bolt against the divider and locked it in place with a lock nut. No rattle and it will be fine until I have to take the headers off again.

I had a similar problem. I tried just removing the divider, but the force of the exhaust against flat of the header kept blowing out my header gasket, or causing significant exhaust leak in the middle. I had the machinist tap a hole in the head(aussie 2V) and placed a bolt that would tighten on the divider to hold it in place. I also mad a flat place on the divider for the bolt to sit. It did loosen up until I used locktite on the bolt. So far no noise, and no exhaust leak.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I will just leave it out for a while untill I have the head off so I can put the welder to it!

Have any of you guys tried using high temp RTV instead of a header gasket? Supposedly it's an old mechanic's trick. I think I am going to try it on mine when I install my header.

Planning to do that also. Not on headers but on stock manifolds.

I wouldnt worry bout it. The differance is going to be nominal ( I used to chuckle inside back in the days when everyone thought that was THE mod, lol )

AS far as the high temp RTV - I use a liberal coating of Permatex Copper On both sides of ALL my exhuast gaskets - Never have any leaks.

Learned that one from Good ole Inliner on this very board - haha.

Orielly's sells a tube of this stuff calle magnum steel. My parts guy (the only one who knows what he is talking about) says he has used it to fix everything from a cracked exhaust manifold to a lawnmower frame. Anyone have thoughts on making the divider out of this?

I learned the copper coat trick from John also! Combined with a stock gasket, I've never had a header leak with a port divider :D :D

Dan,

Now on my 1980 head, I removed my divider and it would blow the gasket every time no matter what I tried to do! I actually ended up reinstalling my stock manifold until I got the divider fixed.

So it may or may not work allright for ya. All you can do is try!!

Later,

Doug

Used the magnum steel on my port divider instead of welding it in. Fitted the divider then used a layer of the magnum steel over the top. It has been a year and so far so good although my car is a fair weather weekend warrior. I will be installing a header soon so when I remove the stock manifold I will see how it is holding up and let you all know.

Ditto on the permatex copper. Awesome stuff. Also try wrapping your header bolts with plumbing teflon wrap, they'll never backout again.

WHat about a dual outlet header on a 200ci motor i am rebuilding mine but not sure if i should weld one in i dont even know how to fit it in the exaust port can anyone help.

Specs on my 200 are:

mallory dist.
mallory ingnitor
isky cam
Kb pistons
Crane crank
flame thrower coil
flame thrower wires
the Performance Head, oil pan, rocker arms, headers, from fordsixparts.com
melling pushrods
weber carb
cliffy adaptor
flow master mufflers
flow master glass packed tail pipe tips :D

When I first did the header and duals on my car, I had the port divider epoxied in too. It broke loose after 3 weeks. Re-apoxied it again, and it came loose a week later.

Thanks to sore knuckles and frustration from removing/installing the header and making a new gasket each time, I just removed the head and had a shop weld the thing in and machine the surface flat. Turns out it was good timing too--I replaced the lifters and pushrods while the head was off and did some paint/detail work too. In the end, I got a tighter exhaust sound and better mileage (from new lifters/rods), so it was a sweet deal! :)
