All Small Six Time for an Exhaust System...

This relates to all small sixes
I checked the site this morn & seen this exhaust post. Within the last few weeks I installed a 2 1/4" dual 8 piece exhaust system from summit on my 67 vert 200/ c4. The kit comes with hangers & clamps . Aluminized with mandrell bends . It fit quite well with the exception of the passenger side tailpipe which was not bent correct, but it was fixed by cutting and rewelding it twice .

Prior to this I had installed a set of the ebay 3 into 1 split stainless header from speed daddy .Trying to get ready for an alumn head install.

The exhaust system is a collector back kit . I installed the pipes thru the center with the 45 degree bends toward the header down pipes . I had to purchase a couple of 2 to 2 1/4" reducers & I picked up 2 -2" catalytic convertor flex connectors to tie onto the down pipes. You can

get that done at a muffler shop with pipe or probably cut the last 2 collector pieces up and use them.

Installed 2 Megna Flow Stainless slant cut rolled tip exhaust ends last week to dress it up a little. Everybody who hears it says it does not sound like a 6 cyl but like a v8. As far as it haveing a driveing sound I haven't noticed one but I do have a bad ear. I've driven it top up & down for some it might sound a little loud when your standing on it thru 1st & 2nd but when it hits the last gear it tones down.

For a stock 200 with only a sniper, a header
&dual exhaust system it runs ok . When i first got the system on i ran it thru the gears on a test run 50 in 1st ,70 in 2nd & still pulling strong in 3rd. The header & duals are defitenly an improvement over the stock exhaust drinking straw size exhaust system on my 200.
The 2 1/4" pipes fit thru my vert fine no banging or rattling around.

Maybe after I post here some I can get the hang of posting my pictures.

In a few weeks I hope to have my reproduction factory console
& a set on nos factory oem fog lights installed on the Money Pit.

This past weekend I got one of the 4 new window regulators installed & yesterday afternoon the last 2 new door hinges on. What a pain in the a## that was.

Sorry about this long rambling post but I keep forgetting to check in here. I will post some more when I start the install on the alumn head. I checked in with Schneider cam's 2 days ago for an up date on my new lifters they did'nt & still don't have . Good news is my cam has been ready for about a month

My opinion on duals would be 2" and a set of Blackwidow mufflers. Blackwidows are made to eliminate drone. Or The Coffin. I personally have the Blackwidow Venom. But have heard the Coffin in person on a 6. They sound great. But it's personal choice.
I used to have Flow 40's. I have been running the Clifford single out header since before this forum.

Links are below:

the speed daddy's R great, I wuz thinkin "A lill big" on the dual 2.25 all-the-ways but then saw the alloy head is comin. I too will have the lill flexpipe in there but asa 6 - 3x2, then 2:1&out - in an off rd rig (C below) all SS and only 4 ft exhaust flange to tip of tail pipe. I plan on building a heat shield fire wall to rockers where it will exit, no rug in the vehicle...

Update...

Having some tuning issues, so I threw on a pair of 2.5" down to 2" collector reducers and added 18 inches of flex pipe.
I don't know if it made any back pressure worth talking about but...

I actually like the sound. I might just run dual 2" straight pipes all the way back!
I can't believe what half an inch of diameter makes...dang.

Car is running super lean. So someone suggested I put some length of exhaust on it.
Also with the Weber, I noticed it liked having the air cleaner on ;-)

I would say its time to re-jet the Carb... A low restriction exhaust always wants more fuel, some more than others... A carburator always likes something to straighten the airflow in and over the air bleeds... I would say leave your exhaust mods., and now tune on the Carb.

X2 yes just on a general average changing to a set of headers and good exhaust can often use 2 numbers bigger in jet size. Best of luck

I read your comment about backpressure. There is a common misperception that an engine "needs" backpressure, otherwise you lose torque. I don't know if that is what you meant, but I thought I would share that and engine needs zero backpressure whatsoever, and any backpressure would actually work to your disadvantage. In reality, you can have too large of pipe dimeter (header dimeter primary tube and/or exhaust pipe diameter), but the resulting performance degradation would occur as a result of a loss of (reduced) exhaust gas velocity/savaging, and not anything to do with backpressure. An ideal exhaust system would have zero backpressure, but would be constructed using pipe diameter sized to maintain sufficient exhaust gas velocity.

There is a common misperception that an engine "needs" backpressure,

uhh oh
there's the rabbit hole ...

> for a wild range of opinions, ask : " ... do 4 stroke exhaust systems need 'backpressure' ? ".

have fun

... for awhile' 250 Tri-Power Comet had Dual out headers in to dual glasspaks then 2X1 into cable operated dump out side with cable to driver ...

. .

Cool !.. A cable operated exhaust cut out, i used to see those in the J C Whitney catalog for ever back in the day. Was always curious how well they worked. Always wondered about the cutout and the cable rusting stuck, and maybe leaking exhaust noise some. Curious, how well does it work ?... Yes the old wives tale about needing back pressure, all from people who dont under stand exhaust tuning... If anybody cares enough to look into old heavy reading on the subject. Look up old books by Robert Bentley.. " The Design and Tuning of Competition Engines ", and " Scientific Design of Exhaust and Intake Systems". Long winded but a good look into pressure wave tuning on old British crocks that make no power any way. It goes way down the Rabbit hole, even about exhaust megaphone type silencers and the extra power you get... Good reading if you can stand it.

is it Dizzard who is the acknowledged pro on it all?
"...look into pressure wave tuning..."
no, it's not back pressure but scavaging that is to be considered. Anyway its still all in post #14'n 20 if I'm asked the Q this thread duz. (Gettin in da weeds now y'all). Were's our ol emojis when we need them...banana man? hoppin flamer?

chad... Your message is all over the place. What you smoking tonight ? Let me try and catch up here. Dont know if my beers will do it.

"...all over the place...'
thats good? In some ways I do not want to be @ more than the 2, 3 doz Boards (some boots on the ground, right geographicly HERE - cmmttees I staff). But if its like graffittie, no that would not be good~

"...smoking...?
I do not smoke, nor drink (drugs'n alcohol)

thnx 4 da direct posts to me. 'Preciate it.
Hand arthritis, poor keyboard skills, several learning disabilities, use of the vernacular, character'n personality? U R not alone in such comments. Enjoy or get 'em ina twist. It's nice to have choice (not so great to B stuck). Some just use the "Delete" button. Again as said - priceate the direct posts. Nowa return to Mr Wak's thread (altho shifts frm exhaust to carb and onto...?)

Upped the idle jets to 85 Primary / 65 Secondary...
Got it to run much better, but it still won't idle without turning in the speed screw like 3 1/2 to 4 turns, which is making it impossible to get a timing light on it accurately. But it is sounding and running way better now...I actually have SOME color on the plugs now!

Checking the floats, they were about 12mm and Weber wants 14mm . So I adjusted that. Not put back together yet.
I also grabbed an inline fuel pressure gauge to check what coming off of the pump.
All that will have to wait until another day....

I spent 9 hours upside down under the dashboard replacing the kingpin & bushings for the clutch/brake pedals...
What a nightmare.

Piece of advice...
If you buy that bushing kit from CJ Pony, it doesn't come with any instructions, and you'll be scratching your head a little.
Hope you have access to an grinder, arbor press, and a welder.

Cheers guys, Wak

Hi wakjob, Glad to hear your making progress yes that's a good plan to check the fuel pump pressure to the Weber carb. They don't like very much fuel pressure and work good at about 2 1/2 to 3 psi I think 3 1/2 is about the max they will take, in their case less is more compared to what a Holley, Autolite / Motocraft 2V carb's.

My Pontiac 400 had Flow Masters on it and the drone was terrible. I replaced them with Dynomax Ultra Flo mufflers which are a straight through glass pack that look like turbo mufflers. Drone went away and have a great sound.
A couple of months ago I replaced the engine and exhaust on the square body truck. I went with Flowmaster FlowFX series which is the Holley/Flowmaster equivalent of the Ultra Flo. It was a cheaper alternative at around $40 per muffler. Sounds great on the 327 that I installed.

Anyone know if this exhaust kit will any fitment issues with a '65 T-code convertible?
I have a local shop that can get from the header to the beginning of this kit.
