Hey guys,,

got my timing chain in this morning and took off the day to install it. the motor runs better and alot more beefier at idle however i still have a problem no mattter what i do it wont idle in dive and i have no clue why. when i drive it though the transmittion is very sloppy it shifts from 1 to N to 2 to N to 3 it almost like the bands are not prperly adjusted it never did this before but im thinking engine dynamics messed with the Automatica tranny kick down. Also there is a calbe on the stock linckage the connects the throtle to the transmittion and when the pedal is to the floor it pulls a lever on the tranny foreward i was wondering what this is exactly is that the Automatic tranny kickdown. My timing is set at 12 TDC and in neutral or park it is idleing at 1k rpm. when i drop it into drive it drops to almost 250 rpm so it barely runs and just gives up. I hope you guys can help me with this problem im having it sucks having to restart at stop signs.

It sounds as though you have a vacuum leak. With the transmission shifitng problem, the first thing I would look at is the modulator and modulator vacuum line.

On the back right side of the transmission there is a canister that has a vacuum line connected to it. This is th modulator. inspect the hose that connects it. It may be leaking causing your idle and shifting problem.

Take a close look at all the other hoses as well. Even a small leak will cause a poor idle. The gaskets under the carb base may even be bad.

One way to inspect is to use an unlit propane torch. with the engine running, let the proplane flow over any suspected vacuum leaks. The engine will change running conditions when the leak sucks in the propane.

You may have heard how do this with starting fluid or WD40. I don't like starting fluid because it can be explosive, and WD40 is messy. I don't recommend either of those.
