Does anyone know what the timing realitive to TDC is for a 1966 Mustang 200CI, also the best idle, and the correct spark plug gap?

Thomas

Idle speed varies with manual and auto, as does the timing. Plug gap is best answered by saying "as big as you can, without loss". 37 thou is (from memory) about standard but aftermarket ignitions make 50 quite possible.

IF you know what pinging sounds like, you can set timing to find when it starts to happen (warm motor, warm day, accelerating hard up a hill), note the degrees and reduce by two. Keep that as your base setting.

stock idle specs for 1965 autolite1100, mustang 200 six

C5OF-9510 F, R (auto trans): 500-525 rpm, fast idle speed 1500 rpm

C5OF-9510-E, N (manual trans): 575-600 rpm, fast idle speed 1400 rpm

Mine is automatic ... I have a timing light that I will use and It is currently at about 14 ... what should I retard it to ... also 500rpm at idle???

I have to confess not being 100% sure if the timing is set with vacuum removed (and plugged) or left attached on a Load-o-Matic distributor. :? Certainly it's off on the later ones.

Idle speed for an auto is set with the handbrake firmly on, and the car in Reverse or 1. Don't rev the motor as it may over-run the handbrake! The engine must be up to temp (thermostat open) and otherwise dialled in. Dwell is set first if you still have points, not Pertronix.

In working order you first gap the plugs, then set dwell, then rough-set idle speed, then correct base timing, then finetune idle speed. Lastly, adjust idle mixture and rebalance idle speed as it changes.

I forgot to add:

You set idle speed with a small load on the motor. This is so the car doesn't stall on a wet night... Run your high-beams, wipers (pop the arms off the glass), blower fan, radio and blinker while setting idle. It places a load on the generator or alternator, which translates as extra stress on the motor. Naturally when you turn these off, the idle will go up a few RPM. Similarly, slipping into neutral or park will hear revs increase; it's normal.

Thank you for that step by step but do you happen to know the timing degree and the RPM for idle ...

Thanks

Thomas

All of my I6-200 manuals, back to 1964, show 6B or 8B timing on points-type units, at 500 RPM. The Mustangs show 8B and the Galaxies, Fairlanes and Mavericks are mostly at 6B (except the Grabber, which shoes 8B).

The Fairmonts are at 10B with the DII distributors. The Mavericks with DII distributors show 8B.
