timing problem

the car will start, but the motor runs rough and shakes violently. I think it may be a timing issue, but are there any other possibilities?

Lot's of things can cause this. First thing I would check is my spark plugs. If you still have points check that. Bad fuel filter, bad carb., timing jumped, bad valve(s) spark plug wires. Head gasket leak, these are a few things.
