for almost 2 years my car has been getting worse and worse. not mileage wise and not power wise, but she is just handling worse almost everyday. she rattles and shakes and sounds like hammer noises when I start her up but when she has a rhythm going no problem. when it reaches approx. 2000 rpm it makes a growling noise and a huge noise after I take foot off the gas fast. I am told its the flywheel, torque converter, because most of this noise originates from the rear right part of the engine. nothing externall that I can see isnt making this noise. I have posted clips in the past in case anyone still knows what I am talking about or doesnt. I need to fix this problem soon.

vacuum is at a happy 19 psi, getting approx 23-24 mpg on highway and 15 in city, tranny almost 3 years old and still does good things, has a strong idle when not having those shaking attacks when that noise is around.

havoline,
If you have a bad flexplate, research here on the forum as there was a very enlightening discussion on this a couple of weeks(or last couple of days! :-|) ago.
Terribly important how you retighten if I remember.
Some folks also had some bolts chewing up their starter from the flywheel or flex plate can't remember which right now.
Do a search.
FWIW

that happened this xmas when my starter went out and had to replace it but all these problems already existed and continued to progress. not having those grooves and the plate chewing the starter might contribute my problem but it wasnt the cause that I know. and I do know something, when I got a new tranny the flexplate was originally a bright blue, then later when I took out the starter I noticed it to be a rustic looking black, brown color. sometime roughly after the starter I noticed this happening.

That's really starting to sound like crank walk. Your bottom end may well be dying rapidly.
