Tool/Key?

I am hoping that someone out there can point me in the right direction for this. Does anyone know if there is a tool or key made for removing the screw on housing for the fuel filter that is on the mechanical fuel pump that the 170 six uses? The top of the filter housing has 3 notches at 120 degree intervals, and looks like there is a tool or key that should fit on that for opening the canister for replacement of the filter element. The guy at the parts store today told me that they are not designed to be opened and that the element is not designed to be replaced. I know this not to be the case, but rather than argue with the guy, I bought the pump/filter assembly (which I needed anyway) and came back to the office.
IN the past I have used a strap wrench to remove the filter canister, with damage being caused to the canister as a result.

Is the tool available or am I going to have to see if I can find someone to fabricate one for me?

You have an aftermarket or newer pump. The filters are not replacable. If you look at how the canister attaches at the bottom you'll see that it is rolled over the side of pump itself. The entire canister will rotate if you can get something over it. Good news is that they are cheap!

The old style ones were bolted to the top of the pump. I can't remember if you had to unbolt the canister or if it just unscrewed. The filters are easy to find so it may be worth finding an original type pump if you are after originality.

as far as I know there is no wrench for it. I would jsut put a little light heat to it (propane torch) and some wd40 or similar.if you use a strap wrench put it at the base (near the threaded part) to avoid collasping it.

I got lucky on the fairlsn the filter was remote monted off the coil bracket on a nice cast AL bracket (I think it was also used on the FE motors) I taped the holes for NPT fittings and ran my own new lines (braided SS) I had to ditch it though when I boosted the motor since I was afraid of it popping off.

I've got one on my wagon (original part). Also had a repro one from Charpentier's ; both unscrewed. I had to take the pump off, and clamp it in a vice. Then, unscrewed the top cover with bare hands.

you can if you fill the canister most of the way with water leaving only an air gap where you need to heat. also I was thinking of the FAIRLANE style that is just a cap on it. with lines removed there is not alot to it so once flushed/filled I would feel safe with it. I keep forgetting you guys have the filter on the pumps which makes things a little more complicated.
