Tranny question

I pulled the little 144 engine out of my 60 Comet a few weeks back and the tranny as one whole unit. (My first engine pull). Got the engine sent off to the machine shop and decided to check the condition of the tranny and fluid. When I pulled the top cover plate on the tranny, there was maybe 1/2 inch of fluid sitting in the bottom. The gears all looked great but I was concerned by the low fluid level. My main question is, do you think the fluid spilt out when I pulled the engine/tranny? It was a few weeks ago and I did in a grassy area and didn't notice any spilt fluid at the time. Or is that unlikely and it's got a seal leak? I only drove the car once before pulling the engine and it shifted great. I only had the car about a week before pulling the engine/tranny and didn't see any obvious tranny leak. Thanks for your input.

If it shifted ok before, it will probably be ok now. They leak fluid and when you pulled it, more probably ran out. I would drain the rest and pump some new gear oil in after you get it reinstalled.

I'd also take the torque converter to a shop which cleans them and have it cleaned while you have it out.
You'll then need aditional clean fluid for it as well.
That would result in all new fluid, well except for little in valves and etc so you would maybe be a step ahead on the transmission concerns.
New filter also.
Also you might look at the adjustment instructions and adjust it while its out in the open.
I'm kinda assuming a 2 speed automatic on this.
In any case review your adjustment options.
Some later ones require pan removal for front clutch adjustment if I remember correctly.(I read manual at time of action!)
FWIW

Jack,
Me thinks you are right.
I didn't see(read) top plate.
Now you know why I read a manual at time of operation! :-|
Helps in identification.:-)

Yea, my fault, I should have stated that its a manual tranny. Sounds like a plan, I'll give it a good internal cleaning and just fill it back up when I get it installed. I guess then I'll find out for sure if she's got a leak, thanks.

This is a good time to replace the input and output seals, along with the output shaft bushing. That and new gaskets will help keep you leak free.
