Voltage regulator wiring

I have a 66 coupe with a 200 and C4. The voltage regulator terminal "A" has a two wires connection. One appears to go to the alternator. The other is cut off about six inches. Does anyone know what that wire is supposed to go to? The system seems to charge just fine. It has been that way for several years since I got the car but I would like make it right.
