Water Pump too Short?

Sorry for blowing up the forum so much lately guys:( Keep running into a lotta stuff.

I just replaced my water pump - figgered it was a good "while i'm at it" project. Anyways, after I put it on, I realized that it was a little shorter than my old one. In addition to having to find a super short bolt for the top because the casting changed, it's too short to accommodate my dual-belt pulley. My '65 had AC so of course it had the dual-belt pulley. Howsomever, I don't have the AC system hooked up right now because the compressor isn't working, and when I do hook it up again, I'm gonna use a new Sanden compressor. Short story, I'm never gonna need two belts again. Can I just steal a single belt pulley from my friend and bolt that up?

Thank yall so much!!

Sounds like it's not the right pump, regardless of the pulley set you use it still needs to be the right length of shaft to work.

it won't work, that single belt pulley puts the belt in the same place as the double pulley except the duoble pulley has 2 choices. you will have to get the correct water pump in the end, sorry that's just how it works :wrench:

"...get the correct water pump in the end,.."

& use which shive? the original or can a single be found/used? Sounds like the latter is what's sought...
Thanks -=-

Haven't used that particular pump, but I know GMB makes an aluminum replacement for the early pumps.

However, if your new pump is coming up short of your old pump it is likely a mismatch on the pump. Later 200 water pumps have a slightly longer snout than the early ones to align with the slightly longer snout on the crank & main pulley. What is the casting code on your block?

I forget the 'year' change, but I know it's been posted here before. I'd recommend, getting the right match, as suggested. Good luck

EDIT: I know the 'year' change is listed in the Performance Handbook as well.

New pump from NPD should be here Wednesday - if it doesn't fit I'm going to kick a kitten.

Never had any problems with stuff from NPD though. I should have just started there.

Not at the moment, I'll throw some up tomorrow.

I think I have it taken care of - my friend is gonna let me have the old pump/pulley assembly off of his old engine.

I think I have it taken care of
a ruler & measurement ought to let U know...
Measure both from "the top"...

Sounds like somewhere along the way you got a motor with the later water pump/accessory set up. Pumps are easy to find they are like $25 brand new at any auto parts store. Ask them for a water pump from a 79 Fairmont and see if that matches the pump you took off. The only real difference in the casting is the thickness where the top bolt goes and how far from the block the pulleys are.

Late Pump - http://www.amazon.com/GMB-125-1280-Repl ... &carId=004

Notice the extra metal at the top bolt hole just above where the hose attaches.

May B all the way back to grab the casting numbers on your block to C what U got so U can order the right stuff? hey, I don't know but that would B the very beginning to start correct with...

Haha Chad, it's kind of against my better judgment to do the rational, logical thing first, but I think it's about time to do that ;)

I'm gonna check the numbers later today

sorry bout that steven, hope I am/wasn't bein too patronizing.
One thing I seemed 2 learn w/#s, old vehicles, & ford is that anything can exsist (swaped prts from oem etc). 2nd thing is ford may B different from GM/the others in that the casting #s don't tell what model (or exact yr.) it is. The code is "last yr. of prt's update" and "this vehicle is not the only ford w/your motor oem" My bronk's (170/2.8) has the same casting #s as a 'stang, falcon, and more. BUT - it IS information (& very useful@ that!). Some 1 will B along to correct me if any misinfo provided, lets wait'n C. From THAT you can then go to different shivs.
8^ )
So now U know which (long/short nose) 2 look 4. Ur starter will B the same, I believe - there's a short/long snout by yr. too (not just auto vs man transmission)! Listen to ur father, here, start w/the yr. (patronizing enuff?)
8^0

Not at all Chad!! haha i was being serious - I usually never do the logical thing first, haha!! Yeah for sure, I know my engine is at least a 65 because it has 5 freeze plugs, not 3. Hoping to meet up with my friend soon and get his water pump. Interesting how much mixing and swapping was done...
