Im so used to cars that the computer does the air fuel ratio work for you, but I was out tonight, and I decided to make an educated guess as to where the choke setting and the idle settings on my 1 bbl should be. I drove, then pulled over and adjusted. Again, and again...and again.
Im no stranger to carbs, but the modern car with a eec just spoils you (at least until a sensor gives bad info, and youre running lean, rich, or idle problems. Great to have a tuner/tester).
Anyways, I was so inspired that I found out today that I have a 200, that my tweaking abilities on a carb all came back to me. The thing runs soooooo smooth, and responsive to throttle nice and almost instantaneously. Idle is perfect, sometimes the linkage decides to stick a bit, but tapping the gas a bit brings it back down every time.
I have a glass pack on it, and it roars, but its so quitet if I run at mild throttle, like the cars not even running. Perfect air/fuel, from what I feel in it running.
And who says efi cars are more efficient for emissions? For someone who has the nack for tweaking the carb and choke settings, You can make any carbureted car run SMOOTHER than an efi car. I was next to a guy I know with a newer impala, and his car was idling more inconsitently than mine, and the general noise was louder. And he had stock exhaust. He didnt even realize mine was running till I shut it off.
I am so DONE with the efi cars. Ive had so many sensor problems, its almost unimaginable. Of course, I have a 90 Olds...see how it holds out. A nightmare in the making, fwd and sideways engine. No wonder cars are so "disposable" today. You see almost new cars in the yards with no body damage...meaning mechanical failure that someone couldnt afford or fix. If I didnt have a code scanner, I dont think any of my eecIV Fords would have made it 1/5 as long as they did.
Im glad to have my carb nack back. Its been awhile since I had a carbed car.
My rant...and rave. Thanks for listening, and thanks for info. I should have numbers from the block tomorrow. It may be a 250(?). Shoot for the stars, right?
