what are good signs that a motor has been rebuilt?

i purchased a motor from a guy says it was rebuilt. how can i really tell. said there are about 5000 miles on the rebuild. this was a complete rebuild bore out .020, the nine yards. so today i pulled off the valve cover looks great very clean maybe a new rocker arm ass. but i am questioning bc the spark plugs had a bit of residue on them nothing real bad but were moist. said the motor really hasnt been driven on in 9 months this is an oily residue by the way. also i took a light and looked at the top of all the pistons through the plug holes everyone of them had moist oil on top of them starting from the #1 which was the dirtiest and #6 was the cleanest. i heard it run sounded fine. i checked all push rods rockers and nothin was loose. what do you think?

Well, maybe it was preped for the storage by squirting a little oil in the cylinders, a good way to diagnose it would be to do a compession/leak down test and to inspect the valve seals for any cracks. If it was all done the whole nine yards new valve guides would have been installed.

A receipt matched to the block...

Seriously...it's easy to make a block look rebuilt. My current block was "rebuilt" with 5k miles when I got it. I seriously doubt it.

Drain the oil, flip it and pull the sump. Inspect the bearings by removing one mains cap, and one rod cap. Make sure the interface between the shell and cap doesn't get oily, but that the face of the bearing is well-lubed and the retorque is correct on oiled bolt threads. Look at the bottoms of the bores for honing marks and observe the cruddiness of the rod sides and under the pistons. Examine the oil pump pick up screen. Reassemble with a new pan gasket and filter. You're done.

well i bought it off a guy from mustangsandmore i dont think he would lie to me, but who knows what some people will do for moneyas long as it doesnt tick like a bomb anymore il be happy and the exhaust manifold bolt holes arnt stripped out so i can tighten the manifold

I don't think the guy I bought it from lied...I think the guy that sold him the car told him it was rebuilt. But if it was recently rebuilt, there should be a receipt.

Otherwise, most of the above mentioned is good starting point.

yea i found that out the hard way the kid i bought the car off of was supposed to be my old friend from school well i could write a book about the stuff he lied about. and i just found out another lie yesterday. told me he put in a 100 amp alt so i thought it was, im running aux driving lights rear strobe lights a strobe in my dash and an led in my grille (vol fire fighter) along with halogen head lights and cd player . then i tried to figure out why my lights were pulsing i think i found out lol

Well, theres not always a receipt. My 200 is freshly rebuilt by a guy that works at an engine rebuilder, but he did mine on the side to get me a cheaper price. No receipt. Also, if someone just had the machine work done and assembled the engine themselves, he might only have the receipts for the machine work.

One obvious sign I found on an old engine of mine: It had Dorman brand freeze plugs in it. But, that only means it had been rebuilt at some time. That motor was actually more worn out than my unrebuilt original 63 170.

If it was a legit rebuild (done by a shop in the business of rebuilding engines) then there should be a receipt. The receipt should also show everything that was done to the engine. Some parts will be new (Pistons, rings) and others may have been reconditioned (Rods). Also if it was bored they should show that as well.

If you can't get a receipt then I would do a compression test as mentioned above.

If it runs fine and looks good then run it! What are going to do if you find evidence that it wasn't rebuilt? Sounds like you already paid for it. Throw it in a car and go!!!

I've had engines rebuilt for other cars by mechanics "on the side". I always got a receipt, even if it just listed parts used for future reference.

i've noticed these motors can run really good even with 150k miles on them, if they been tooken care of that is. How are the cylinder walls? if its only got 5k miles i'd give them a look.

He he my 250 ran realy strong with 98,000 miles and a blown head gasket would go 90 mph easy
