what does the X signify?

the new cylinder head I got ( off a '79 Zephyr ) is a D8 head, and it looks like a normal head. except there is a big X about an inch away from the casting #, what does it signify?

well, I sent the head off to have bronze guides done, so I won't be able to get the full casting until thursday,it's expected return date. however, I have constructed a simple diagram of the log face

How is the "X" applied; it looks very different from the rest of the typical casting numbers/letters often seen on the head? Is it scratched in, painted on, or is it raised lettering?
