Hi folks,

New to these boards. Quick Q - see the engine in the attached pic - what is it? the carb is a single barrel.

Thanks in advance :D

oh drat, soz - edited :) just need to give it a moment to load I guess

it's not a loading problem
i'm getting a 403 error when i try to access that pic

i'd suggest using Imageshack.us for hosting if you don't want to give access to your server (or whoever's server that is)

...see the engine in the attached pic - what is it?
It's a boat motor. :stick:

You should have said you're in NZ! I had to look up your IP to make sure you weren't an Aussie.

It's not a UK Ford six like from a Mk II Zephyr? Probably not because of the carby/manifold. Might be a 215/223/262 donk otherwise.

Cheers, Adam.

Ah yeah, soz :D from NZ yeah, top of the north island.

I had a look at the motors you suggested, those appear to be Gen. 3 sixes ("Falcon Six" I think?) - the one thing that gets me though is that the rocker cover on the gen 3 is much taller. The only thing that looks similar to this is the Gen 4 (Truck six?)....

it's confusing

it's definately a Ford motor though....??

Can you look for block numbers near the coil mount? Try to find a code including "6015". Might be a little hidden.

Starting to think it may be a UK six with marinised inlet and exhaust...

I only see three intake ports which is inconsistant with any Ford six I am familiar with. I am pretty sure that is not based on an American Ford six.

Yeah, that's it for sure. Bendix carby from the look of it. I thought they were OEM with two SU's like the BMC six.

Thanks guys :D it seems like the 2.6 motor from a Mk. III Zodiac.

114 horsepower at 3500 or so RPM...?

Do you guys have any suggestions for increasing the horsepower down lower? say, 2000-2500RPM? (seeing as it will be used in a boat)

Can't do anything to the exhaust manifold unfortunately, it's been marinized :(

bump... it started!

:D

Just over $300's worth of 15-plate battery, spark leads, condenser, plug leads, points, fuel and water hoses, blew out two waterplugs, but in the end it started! amazingly easy too, considering it last ran a year ago, and it doesn't even have fresh petrol in it...

Awesome nice sound to it with the straight-through marine exhaust, though not as insanely loud as you'd expect. Very nice rumble, makes the whole boat move :D the boat being wooden also helps the sound.

timing is too fast but that's easily fixable. Valve gaps are nonexistent in places, so it runs a little less smooth than it should. Should also be easily fixable eh? :)

Thanks for the help in identifying this beast folks, been an awesome help!

Next up is (you guessed it) adjusting valve gaps and timing properly, then giving it a good service

ah sweet :) well, I'm not sure about the extent of its "marinization", but a new cam might be a part of it. Its propeller spins like MAD, even at idle (this is the configuration the boat was built for), and it's a 22ft boat with a planing hull - so one thinks that it might have been modified to put out some reasonable power to get this boat to plane properly...

- straight-through 2.5-3" exhaust (at a guesstimate)
- carb with a ~50mm venturi (Zenith carb - this good or bad?)
- fairly large bore intake manifold

Of course it could do with a port & polish job, but where do I get new headgaskets for this beast in this corner of the world :(

also, does anyone know the valve gaps? we set them by measuring the largest of all the intake and exhaust gaps, and setting all the gaps to those. Intake we set to 0.015", exhaust to 0.026" - could this be too big?

Generally, you'd choose lash off either the factory specs (look for the old "Scientific Publications" Zodiac repair manual, or the cam grinder's suggestions. 26 on the exhaust sounds excessive. I'd try 12 and 20 and just see if it faltered at all.

Zenith carby with a 2" bore sounds like off a Tiger Moth! Might be something rare like that... Worth investimagation.

Soo much stuff is able to be found, along with a train of mates and componets sources which will make you delighted to have found this great little engine.

Zenith is okay, but the good old Holley 1908 found on old Valiants and some Falcons is even better.

Most Zodiac punters just use a Cortina Weber 32/36 on an adaptor. Or tripple SU HS6 or HIF7's from a Jag or Morris Marina. They wake the 2.6 up into the 150 to 160 hp level with the right cam, even more if you use a known engine combination of valves, cam and compression upgrades.

And a final note on triples, exhast, cams and compression

Hi Guys,
I use to run a 2.5 litre(156 inline six from a english Zephyr 6).With it I ran lots of varying cams and carbs.I had a aftermarket old 60's intake with connecting sections between bases.I ran 3 factory carbs (downdraught zenith single throats).Fuel MPG went up 5mpg over a Weber two barrel, grunt out of the corners was enough to cause clutch slip on a beefed clutch, un real win-win.I had trouble with flooding but that was crap in the tank.I used the standard mech pump. The acc pumps were set standard.I ran a set of headers and 260 adv dur cam with 9.5;1 compression and it looked wayyyy cool  I used a rubber hose for balancing them, a vac guage works too or stactic setting them with a rod down each butterfly if the throat allows.Best system I ever had.

Cheers! :D

on a different note though, went to take my car for a warrant of fitness today. The guy down at the automotive shop had a 3.9 inline six from an EA Falcon lying around, around 1990, 202,000kms - wants NZ$100 (~US$60) for it - just wants to get rid of it apparantly.

The question is, would this bolt right up to the gearbox and the engine mounts? the guy down at the shop reckons so, but I want to be doubly sure....

$100 is awfully cheap :D

(will just need to get a new carb for it... don't want EFI in a boat)
