Now that the plastic is burned, the trace is carbon. It is a dead short between terminals.

Thanks MustangSix - Carbon eh - now that makes sense. Cool. Probably should order a second cap for insurance. I need the old bird on the road and these couple of days without her are a real pain.

I checked the plug leads and they seemed ok. About 1kohm for the 1&2 plugs 3k for 3&4 5.5k for 5 and 6k for 6. Near new suppression leads

New cap and rotor went in this arvo, and zoom. The old girl sprang back to life. Learned plenty along the way. Now lots more confident servicing my bird knowing there's plenty of assistance just a post away.
