What is the cleanest way to wire the DUI distributor?

I am installing a DUI distributor on my 66 mustang 200 inline 6. I know I need full 12 volts to power the DUI.

My question is:
1) What is the cleanest way to wire the DUI distributor?

2) Can I use the existing original wire that is connected to the coil to power the DUI? Thanks.

There really is no one way to wire the DUI. Its all by personal preference and how you think its neat and tidy.

Yes you can wire the DUI with original wiring, I wired mine up straight off my Ignition control module. Only 2 wires and I get my full 12V, and it looks pretty neat.

on your 66 the existing wire has a resister in it that cuts voltage back to about 6 volts plus i think the stock wire is only 16 gage. you can cut the resister out . its the pink wire coming out of the back of the ignition switch. (it almost looks spliced in a few inches long) and replace it but then you may have voltage problems due to worn contacts in the ignition switch or smaller than recommended wire size.I ran a 12 gage fused wire from the solenoid(the yellow wire) to a 30 amp relay mounted on the firewall under the shock tower brace from there one wire to the D.U.I. ,connect the original coil wire (with the inline resister intact) and a ground from the relay attached by the screw that hold the relay to the firewall. all parts available at your local auto parts for about $20.00. 12 full volts and no cut wires under the dash

Just be sure that the wire you choose is live during cranking as well as 'on'. Mine was not live during cranking for some reason. Never did figure out why just hooked back up the other wire from the I terminal on the starter solenoid.

I ran a wire from the DUI to the back of the key ignition. One wire very clean. You have to unplug the pink wire behind the dash next to the key ignition. I unplugged the pink wire and stuck my new wire coming form the DUI into the pigtail where the pink wire was plugged in. Mustang Monthly did an article on this a few months ago, check their web site, it had photos and a real good description on how to do it.

Thank you for the info guys.

mach1 mark,

1)How did you get your single wire through the fire wall? I looked but there is no extra hole unless I drill a new hole.

2) Do you know the date of the Mustang Monthly magazine where the article is?

3) Did you feel a significant increase in power when you installed the DUI?
What carb are you using?
Where did you connect the vacuum hose from the DUI?

Cuz the carb that I am going to install is the Autolite 1100 Vaporizer (from Pony Carbs). Thanks in advance.

Yes I drilled a small hole for the one wire, i figured one little hole wouldn't hurt.
I looked for the article I couldn't find it, I'll try harder if you really need it. I have a whole stack of Mustang Monthly, it's in there somewhere.

As far as the difference in the DUI, I noticed a huge difference. First I put it on a stock 100,000 mile engine, noticed a big difference right a way. Of course now a have a Aussie head, bi9g valves and so on. But I think you will be pleased. If you are not, something is wrong.

Thanks for the idea! :D

I just went and bought the relay and pigtail from Car Quest and am going to rewire mine this weekend.

I found a wiring diagram on the Classic Inlines site on how to wire it up.

Thanks for your reply.

Please let me know if you find the article from Mustang Monthly.

What did you do with the original existing wire that was originally hooked up to the coil and also the pink wire that was hooked up to the ignition switch? Did you remove it?

Do you have any pictures? Thanks.

The original wire that was hooked up to the distributor is taped or attached to the wire that hooks up to the oil pressure sensor. So, I just let it hang down. As far as the pink wire its a female attachment, so it just floats behind the dash, again I just let it hang, you could rap it with some black tape.

I'll look for the article, maybe I saw an article in something else or somewhere else besides Mustang Monthly. Maybe I dreamt it.

I want to add to what fordconvert said about cranking power. Don't bypass the brown wire wire I, without being prepared to loose your backup lights and don't touch the wire labeled S without loosing your neutral safety switch.

As for the clean look:

I hid the relay switch under the dash to keep thing under the hood looking stock on my '67. I think midlife66.com has some great wiring diagrams for your '66.

I like to remove the colored plastic on tined copper connectors; crimp, solder and cover with clear heat shrink wrap. Hey, it's good enough for NASA.
