what you paid to have your six rebuilt

Just looked up on Autozone here:

3 year warranty Motorcraft $1649 A (New) D8DZ-6VO12BRM
"Original Equipment" Replacement Engine with Core value $250

3 year warranty SureFire w/o Smog $1396.99 Part DF31
Remanufactured with Core value of $500

3 year warranty Evergreen Remanufacturing $1128.99 Part #FM24L
w/ Core value of $200

I would probably go with the first one---it sounds like a new "crate" motor not a remanufactured....but you should definitely ask about that one. I have heard mixed opinions regarding remanufactured engines....These may be better though---I have never personally bought either.

I've found it far cheaper to go one of 2 routes:

1) Look for someone that pulled a 200 in favor of a V-8. I got a block with 5k miles on it since rebuild for $50, Pan to head.

2) Look at some of the engine remanufacturers. Many times they are FAR cheaper then your local mechanic.

What are the differences between what they call a "New Engine" and a "Remanufactured Engine"? Here is what S&S Engine Remanufacturing listed as the work done to my new (remanufactured?) engine: Cyc. heads are pressure checked, "New" valves, valve springs & keeper, "New" pistons, pin bushings, chrome molly rings, timing gears & cam-bearings, timing gears & chain, lifter, push rods, rockers, balls & nuts, oil pump, and gaskets. Also included is diamond honed valve guides, three angle cut valve seats, blocks are bored with deck plates, cylinder walls are diamond honed, and crankshafts are ground and polished for .002 clearance. The camshafts are ground to O.E.M. spec.s, hardened and polished; and connecting rods are sized to .002 clearance. They also do a Pre-Run on a Simtest Machine. Not knowing the difference between what a "new engine" or a "remanufactured engine"actually is, I would take a literal translation of the word "new" as meaning never been used before! ??????

That's the big question and a good one too. This is what it said about the recon engine:

Attention: to order must know if original engine has - block casting #D7BE, D8BE - crank casting #1H, 1HG, 2HA, 3H - head casting #D3, D5, D7 Nationwide 3 year / unlimited mileage warranty. Dynometer test document included. Equipped with new lifters, pushrods, Premium rod and main bearings. reground and micro-polished crankshaft, Cylinder heads are magnafluxed, and engine is spin tested to measure compression, oil pressure and oil flow. warranty for commercial applications is 6 months. Call 1-800-817-3266 for warranty claims, application verification, and estimated delivery times.

It didn't say much about the others, just that the Motorcraft was a "remanufactured, Original Equipment"....You would need to call and get detailed specifics...The one I looked up was for a '78 with a front sump oil pan. Sounds like yours got the works James. Is it "New" I don't know---there are probably some out there though.?....

I found them a few years back as well, www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com. IT's good to hear form someone that actually bought onoe and is happy. The warrenty sure is impressive.

AutoZone is so easy though, I'd be tempted to go that route. Although, I'm not sure I understand the three choices.
