What's the "X" mean ?

Just curious. I was looking under the hood, making carb adjustments and noticed that the 250 block and intake has a large letter "X" cast on them. Anyone know what this is for ? The other thing that is odd is that the Maverick is a 77 but the block has a casting # starting in D8DE. ??
