Which bell is it?

I've been hearing talk of a big bell small block six...

Is this a big or a small bell?

the casting number on the block is the easiest way to identify them
don't suppose you have that?

of course, someone will recognize that one

That's a '67-up dual drilled block, with the C4 just recently taken off.

The picture is from ebay, but we could use some pics like this here of the different types of bells,logs, carbs and blocks. It could be helpful for quickly identifying parts or just helpful for people to reference what is being talked about when certain terminology is used here.

The motor you show in the pic is an early 66 and earlier, late 66 they raised the bell housing mounting area at the top up to meet the head. hope this helps clear up some of the confusion. No way will the later bell housing fit. ( wanted to use an early block as a dummy motor and it wouldnt line up with my later bell) They show 3 differnt style conversion plates when doing a t-5 swap a 65 only , 66 only , and a late 66 and later Big bell housing

This is correct.

That is a dual drilled block, that most recently utilized the smaller of the two patterns.

it's a dual drilled block. I have one in my garage,a c6*** casting.

three upper holes, two bolt holes and one for a locating pin.

the one in the pic is likely newer with the large airpump pipes on the the 70's exhaust manifold.

Dual Drilled block but the grease outline shows it was used with the "Small BEll " Fordomatic 2spd (and 2.77/3spd type) . Under the sludge you can see there are two bolt holes and locating dowel for the "Bigger Bell" used for the C4 / Toploader etc....

This is not to confuse with the late 70's/early80's "BIG BELL" pattern 200/3.3 that used the top part of the SBF/ 250 bell.
