We have a stock 1965 Mustang 200 w/auto trans. The engine has just been rebuilt, but on re-assembly it was discovered that the 1100 carb was not working so they put what appears to be a Holley 1940 on. The Holley also need work but it was free and it runs okay. Which carburetor is most worthy of a rebuild. We have electronic ignition with the dual advance late model Ford distributor so the carb and distributor need not match for vacuum advance reasons. Thanks for the advice.

Contact a company called "Pony Carburators . com". They're pretty knowledgeable on which works better for what engine..ZZ

Howdy Tomm:

Either is "Worthy" of a rebuild. It really depends on what you want, what your goals are? The Autolite 1100 is original and linkage and air cleaner will be stock and correct. The Holley #1940 is a universal FoMoCo replacement carb designed to fit several six cylinder applications. It should be compatible with your linkage and air cleaner as well. Both will be similar in performance and function. The Holley is a slightly more complex carb and should run a little leaner and cleaner. In either case make sure air and fuel are well filtered.

Since having the correct stock one barrel is not an issue with you, I'd be inclined to use the Holley with your DuraSpark electronic distributor and use a ported vacuum source on the carb for the vacuum advance.

Adios, David
