will the pistons from a 170cid fit in and work in a 200cid what is the differeces between them ? is it just the size of the cylder or the length of the rod????????????????

If you go to the main page and click on Tech it comes up with some links one says casting numbers..
It list some figgures. Bore/Stroke and such.. All tho it doesn't list the B/S for the 170 not much info on that motor yet I guess.. but looking at the 200 and the 250 they have the same bore but different stroke's. You can mike your pistons and then check them with the figgures on that page and see if they match..

It won't go. Well, it will but you'll have terrific blow-by if it runs. The 170 uses a 3½" bore, the 200 has a 3.68" hole. That's 90 thou clearance all around!
 
That wouldn't be a good idea. They would probably break as soon as the engine is turned over since not enough of the ring would be on the ring landing of the piston.

It would be interesting to see what would happen though!
(just not on my engine :wink: )
 
ok what about useing the 200 rods&pistons with the 170 crank ? can that be done ?
 
If you have a 200 block, 170 crank it's a 188 motor. You'd need longer rods than the 200 and 170 have.
 
A 200 block can take a 170 crank and 200 cube rods if you use 255 or 2.5 HSC pistons. They are 50 to 90 thou taller than stock 200 pistons.
 
well i guess i im really in a mess then i have good 200 block and a good 170 crank but you say in need a 255 piston and use the 200 rods? if i used 200 pistons would the motor run with less horse power or not at all?and if i use 255 pistons then i have cut the block to fit them right ? wow seems like alot . i should have got a 170 block in the frist place! my thought was hay 200 has 20 more horse power go with that but i guess i was wrong cuz the cranks are different the marine one has a big end that fits a seal for the outdrive yoke to slide in . hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!! what to do ?.....keith
 
If you use the 200 pistons w/170 crank the deck height would be so low that the compression ratio would be down arond 6:1 or so. It would indeed run, the idle would be nice and smooth. Don't expect much performance when you step on the go pedal though. That compression would be about like the flathead sixes of the 1940's, or your Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine. I certainly wouldn't recommend this combination, but it would work nicely with a turbo and about 20 psi boost 8)

Also.. is the 170 crank from a four main journal block? And is the 200 block a seven main journal?

If so it's time for a new 200 crank to match the block. :P

hey live and learn ...right what can i say i never did one before this . i tryed to take the cheap way out but thats not going to work ! thanks
 
Actually, I'm not sure you can't put a 4-main crank into a 7-main block. I know the bearings used are the same. Three sets of one plus a thrust shell pair.
