I recently tore apart my motor because of a poor idle and some leaks. There didnt turn out to me any major problems with the motor but I fixed it anyway including around $400 of work on the head. No change in the idle. I had a friend that does a lot of car work over to help me with my brake problems and he wanted to tinker with the idle problem a bit. This is a 66 200 with an 1100/ DS2/C4. What we noticed is if we left the vac line off the dizzy (unplugged), put a vac pump on the dizzy (to get the timing advanced again), and adjusted the idle mixture we could get the thing to purr at 500 rpm. For some reason the vac leak (into the center port in the log) makes it run smooth. There is enough range in the idle screw to get it in the right range with or without the leak. THe theory is that the extra air is helping to atomize better at those low speeds. His theory which I tried the next day was to move the throttle blade over so most of the gap was on the side with the idle passages. It helped. It still shakes a bit but it doesnt load up and stall like it did before I moved the blade. The next thing I want to try is to swap the accy vac lines (brakes, dizzy, trans) and PCV and see if changing the flow makes any differnce. I figure since the PCV is a constant leak maybe moving it to the side with the idle screws will help the mix issue. I also have a couple of more carbs with various issues I think I can combine to make another complete good one to see if that changes any of the issues.
What you you all think? Am I crazy or could I be onto something?
