I have 2 different 215/223/262 ford L6 heads... One has a triangle shaped combustion chamber and one has a smaller oval shaped one . My question is when did these heads change.. which one is the early head and which one is late. I want another small chamber one and need to know what year to look for. anybody know about these heads????...

I think you will find that the 215's are the ones that have the triangle shape combustion chambers the 215's were made in 1952 and 53, casting numbers and the date code will help ID them exactly. The 223 combustion chambers look the same through out their total production from 1954 to 1964. The first couple of years of the 223 Heads before 1957 will have the smaller valves too. Good luck

According to my '62 Motors manual, stock compression ratios are as follows...

215-7.0
223
'54-7.2
'55-7.5
'56-8.0
'57-58-8.6
'59-62-8.4

Not sure what changed over the years, if it was the pistons, heads or what.
Also I have no info on 262 heads, but I know they use flat top pistons, unlike the domed ones in a 223. They also have bigger valves. So I'm guessing the combustion chambers are different. Been too long since I had mine apart......I can't remember.

My Motor's Truck Repair Manual #24 lists the 262 compression at 8.0 in 1962, 7.9 in 1963, and 7.9 in 1964. Engine code on the truck rating plate was B for those 3 years. I remember the triangular combustion chambers in the 215 but do not remember any of these engines with domed pistons.
