170 log head

: I am going to be building a 170 (7main block) for a HA/GR. I can't use the 200 or 250 block and must use a stock head. However I can rework the head for Tri Power and am looking at running 3 Holley 1940 170CFM carbs. I was thinking of reworking the stock log to take the carbs and as I am going to be leaving the line at 3000rpm+ I do not need a progressive linkage. What are some of the best ways to rework the log? I had thought that I could get carb mounts (2) off of "Junk Heads" . Machine them and the ends of the log to take them,then Braze/Weld them to the log. What about milling the log off and making a new tri power base out of steel tubing and Brazing/Welding it to th stock runners? I can't run an Aussi or Argie head as they are too new. I'd like to run a Holley 500cfm 2Barrel but I can't in this class so must run a Tri Power. Please give me any and all idea.

If I were you and it were allowed, I'd mill that log off and build a tubing/sheet metal intake with your choice of induction (2x 1bbl) (2x 2bbl) (3x1bbl) (1x4bbl) make it easily adaptable to any of the above choice incase you ever change your mind.

If you fire up the Search (listed above) and type in AK Miller you will find quite a few articles that highlight some of his early 6 cylinder work like, in this thread I hosted an article for another fordsixer.

Cut a trio of flanges in ¼" steel plate, and braze to the side of your intake log. Fit three of these carbs:



Scads of airflow, excellent control over the fuel supply curve. Period correct, too!

Thanks for the tip but I don't think they (the Hamps) will allow side draft carbs. I know the 1953 Vet had side drafts and the 58 Fords had a Holley 4 barrel. But they do not allow the Holley so I dought they would allow sidedraft carbs.
