1982 fairmont temp sender

Does the temperature sender (idiot light) have any purpose other than the idiot light? I know on newer cars the signal is used for the computers. Just wondering before I pull it and put in a mechanical gauge. (200 C/I engine )

No, it only powers the light. You're set - although there are adaptors that allow use of both gauge types at once.

in my 80 capri, i had a plug in there for 2 years before I got a new temp sensor.
