200 Exhaust set up

Hello everyone. I know that this topic has been talked about before but I want to throw it out there again. I am looking for suggestions for an exhaust set up for a 68 Mustang coupe 200, automatic. I have the Clifford Performance 6 into 2 header on the car and I have the X pipe. I thinking of going with 2.25 inch custom tubes coming from the header into an original dual outlet set-up (like something that would have originally been mated to a 289 or 302). I'm thinking Cherry Bomb mufflers. Does this sound like something that might be a decent set-up or should I just go with custom from the header back? Thanks for any suggestions!

It depends on the mods done to the engine already or future planned mods. with a dual exhaust set up an engine with a header only I would go with 1 7/8" pipes. you could still use 2" mufflers to give you a better choice in mufflers. a street 200 with more carb, cam, head work etc. 2" max pipe size for duals. It's not just about reducing back pressure but maintaining exhaust velocity. here is a sizing chart from magnaflow. http://www.magnaflow.com/07techtips/faq/question10.asp. I also have the clifford full length dual outlet header using 2" thrush turbos turned down at the rear axle on my tri power engine. I used to have a clifford exhuast sizing chart and their recommendation is what I have posted. too big of a pipe can effect low end torque.

Sorry for the limited information on the engine. Here is what I can remember/document:
Original 68 block was pulled in 1986 because it was cracked. Replaced with a block from a 72 Maverick (VIN indicates this)
Block was rebuilt .040 over and it was done at a local speed shop so I can only assume that the rebuild components were not stock but I really don't remember
The head is a 67 that was part of the rebuild in 1986. The original 68 head was warped. The same shop redid the valves and springs but I have no receipts on what components they used.
The head was off last year for the installation of the exhaust port divider from Clifford. I had the head milled and I had the exhaust side trued to clean up the welded area of the port divider.
Other mods are minimal - Pertronix ignitor and coil
Autolite 1100 rebuilt by Pony Carb.

Thanks again for the suggestions When I make my decision I'll post the results

My son and I put a low-buck Summit Racing 2 1/4" exhaust kit on the crossflow coupe. Generic turbo muffs, but it sounds pretty good, fits ok.

2" might sound better (more Jag-like).

I agree with Jack, a 2" exhaust pipe will be fine at engine speeds below about 4,000 rpm. Above that backpressure will start to hurt performance, I would recommend a 2 ¼” exhaust pipe to 150 bhp or 5,000 rpm and 2 ½” exhaust pipe from 150 bhp to 200 bhp or 5,500 rpm and above all the way back to a single turbo muffler of the same diameter inlet and outlet designed for the displacement of the engine. Dual exhausts are for bent eights!
